Tips for The Fish Market

Overcooked and overpriced seafood, but nice setting. The fish and seafood are fresh and the restaurant offers a good selection of fish. It is very unfortunate that the cook tends to overcook the seafood (whether it is mahi, halibut, or lobster), which results in a rather dry meal. In addition, the snapper I had in my last visit was not only overcooked but salty as well. The dinning rooms inside the restaurant are dark because of the poor lighting. However, the outside sitting area is very nice, alongside the canal. The menu offers a decent selection of wines (not impressive, though). Prices are out of line with the quality of the food and the poor service. There are better choices when it comes to seafood in San Mateo. King Fish has some good dishes (but inconsistent service) and my latest discovery has been Lure...

Fresh but very plain seafood. Like all restaurants in this chain, this place serves fresh but plain seafood. Location is hidden away just underneath 101 Expressway. Service is very slow and sometimes incompetent. Check-in desk is always very sullen. Interior seating is generally dark but the outdoor, waterside seating is lovely in nice weather. Place seems to attract mostly an elderly crowd. Prices are very reasonable, including for wine. Lobster/crab bibs smell horrible, perhaps because of material or print dye used?

Bad service and bad food.. Badly prepared "fresh" seafood. My halibut was oily (how could they do that do a piece of halibut?) and the piece of fish was very small. In fact that was the smallest piece of halibut I have ever eaten in a restaurant (a seafood restaurant at that!!). My girlfriend ordered rice with her entree but got the wrong kind of rice and the waiter did not even bother to replace it! Obviously the service is terrible. Stay away from this rip-off. My bill was $100 for 2 entrees and 3 glasses of wine.
