The Scene
This remodeled Victorian in the heart of the city's Italian neighborhood pays homage to San Francisco's Beat generation. The hotel's entrance on Columbus Avenue, tucked between a bakery and a cafe, opens to a narrow flight of stairs leading to the reception desk and handsomely painted corridors. The hallway light fixtures are handmade from glazed collages of '50s jazz sheet music, Allen Ginsberg's poetry and old menus, and cast a warm glow on a permanent gallery of black-and-white photographs from the book "I Am a Lover," an affectionate celebration of the Beat era.
The Details
The 15 guest rooms contain private baths with showers, one or two queen-size beds, European armoires, bistro tables with wicker chairs, telephones with modem jacks, TVs and framed prints of works by Matisse and Picasso. Larger rooms can accommodate up to four guests. The reception desk is staffed 24 hours a day.
