A Chinese antique store that enchants with glittering jewelry, film history and ancient mystery..
The Scene
Although she's the owner of the world's largest collection of Ching dynasty Kingfisher Feather royal hair ornaments--which director Bernardo Bertolucci borrowed for his film "The Last Emperor"--Peggy Ling never forgets about the folks in her own neighborhood. "It's a melting pot up here," she says of her multicultural digs in North Beach, just adjacent to Chinatown. Accordingly, Ling enjoys talking to customers about her cozy store's remarkable objects and the history behind them.
The Goods
Antiques from China provide fascinating browsing and buying opportunities. If you don't have just the right spot in your pad--or enough cash in your bank account--for an ancient statue, content yourself with a piece of lovely jewelry (Chinese wedding rings are unusual and gorgeous) or some comfy slippers.
