The place is closed. I came up to San Francisco from Mountain View on the train just to dine at this restaurant. We hiked across town from the Fourth and King terminus. When we arrived in front of this place, the doors were shuttered. The place was closed with no signage explaining the restaurant closed.

My six year-old daughter cried right in front of the place because she was looking forward to it from your reviews. Maybe I talked it up too much because we're Czech and there are very few places like this in the area. This isn't Chicago with it's vast array of Czech restaurants. Another one is gone.

Easy trip to Europe. Adorable, yet pricey cafe. Food is pretty tasty, especially their salads. Makes for a great place to hang out for lunch or on a weekday afternoon.

Bohemian hangout with an Eastern European feel in North Beach.. In Short
Travel from Italy to Prague in one block with a visit to this delightful artist's cafe near Columbus Avenue. Round tables topped with colorful tablecloths, romantic murals, a small bar and a couch fill the darkened interior; outside, a handful of wicker tables comprises a small smoker's patio. Regulars read or expound on Socialism over strong coffee, wine, or bowls of goulash and dumplings. Fresh, house-made soups cull a loyal following, particularly the creamy tomato.

Hidden Czech cafe. Hidden from traffic, serving up the most wonderful, creamy tomato soup, Cafe Prague is a true find. Czech-owned and staffed, this independent cafe with its organic, inexpensive food, and artsy, mismatched tables and stained glass is just the ticket for a quiet, warm escape. Travel there to find good coffee and something sweet while reading one of their magazines. Or go for a late dinner with a friend and try one of their pasta dishes. Their foccacia, which they serve with meals, is delicious. I recommend their angel hair with sundried tomatoes, chicken and a light garlic cream sauce. The restaurant is warm, colorful, and all times I've been there, bustling with laughter. If it's warm enough, sit outside. It's not really big enough to call this space a patio, but the glow of street lamps makes the meal feel like magic.

Terrible. My Czech friend warned me that the service might still be stuck in communist times. I thought he was joking. He wasn't.

We had made a reservation but they knew nothing about it when we arrived.

When they finally took our order, it turned out that they were out of just about everything on their menu, which left my meat-eating friends with only one option, of which we ordered 5.

The first one arrived pretty quickly; the other 4 half an hour later.

The first one had pork roast, as advertised; the other four had some other kind of pork. My friends were never told of the substitue.

If we ever waved any of the wait staff over to us, they seemed very annoyed a la "Can't you see that I'm WORKING?"

I don't think I'll ever go back to this place or recommend it. The food was good though.

So what if there's no Czech food. The food here in great, despite the fact the menu isn't Czech related. The atmosphere is casual and warm and the staff is helpful and full of smiles. I love coming here for lunch or a late night pop in. It's a great place to hang out be with a cool mellow crowd.

nothing to do with czech. but the name. they haven't got a single real czech entree on the menu, pretty much nothing different from what i can get in a neighbourhood diner for 1/3 the price. besides, service is a little hectic, the place poorly ventilated, and they don't have a good selection of czech beers. if you are into eastern european cuisine, try old krakow, or some russian joint in richmond.

Great alternative to usual N.Beach resto. Having just moved to North Beach, I have been anxiously trying out as many restaurants/cafes as possible. Cafe Prague is definitely a hidden gem. The food is great. The drinks are good. And, best of all, you won't blow your budget eating here. I would definitely recommend this place as an alternative to the usual touristy places in North Beach.

The best spot in North Beach.... and it's not even italian! I love North Beach but there is a lot of spots that seem to fabricated. When I moved to San Francisco I thought every street and cafe would look like Cafe Prague. It's extremely cool, laid back and has great Jazz with an open bay door to the street on weekends. It could have a bigger menu but you can't beat a pint+9 oz. for $3.50!

plus atmosphere. atmosphere reigns at this little spot where you can see old school sf jazz players between european gigs. wine list is small but cheap and the food is fresh with little appetizers (free) from the friendly foreign waitstaff who are always trying to please you. sandwiches are adequate for lunch, but nothing stand out. meet for drinks or a snack but hit someplace else for a full meal.
