The Scene
A long row of squeezed-together tables running down the middle of this venerable eatery make Tommaso's a great choice for large groups--or tourists who don't mind getting to know their neighbors. For a little more privacy, ask for one of the high-backed booths tucked against the walls. In front of the kitchen, an old brick oven still does full-time pizza duty.

The Food
This is the Italian food everyone knows and loves: Chewy thin-crust pizza, spaghetti with meatballs, fried calamari, clams with white wine and garlic, veal parmigiana served with a side of rigatoni. Spinach pizza may sound like a cruel way to make the kids eat their vegetables, but it's actually fantastic: A standard cheese-and-tomato pie is topped with a brilliant-green layer of fresh, garlicky spinach leaves, which melt down from the heat of the hot-from-the-oven pie.
