No Frills, But Good.
If you go here, tell them to just bring you what they make well... no need to order any old favorites like Beef Broccoli or Pork Chow Mein.
The things they bring out are unique and really quite different from any other Chinese you'll have. Tastes damn good too.
As for the long waits outside... the line moves faster than you'd think, but it's still a pain. Plus, once you start eating, you feel pressure to hurry, which is always a drag.
it's homestyle chinese food with an awesome twist.
We had a great dinner here about two weeks ago. I'd never been, but always heard it was one of the key places in San Francisco Chinatown to go.
What was great is that it wasn't a standard Chinese food menu, but had some really interesting homestyle chinese dishes with modern flair and twists. One thing I didn't love was the mu-shu beef. My wife said it was really good, but it was more of a stewed beef and not my personal preference.
U peeps be crazy. This is the best chicka chinese food ever. A lil dirty but food is o so good.
Oh my god this place is filthy....bad bad place!. If you're going to eat at House of Nanking, I think I should tell you to reconsider it. First of all, the foods were really bad after remodeling. I always went to this place on my San Francisco trip, and what a disappointment. They subtracted ingredients such as penuts and vegetables on nanking chiken. Calmary fried was too sour and salty, and looked really dud and simple. Secondly, I looked around and found dirty towels everywhere. I was shock to see the server was touching kyoza(fried dumpling) with the same hands he was touching the dirty towel! Lastly, bad customer service. Our total came out $45 dollars, and I was expected $5.00 change after gave the server $50.00 bill. Well our gratitude was already charged on the receipt which was $6.00....so we didn't have to spend more money on tips, which I wasn't gonna give them anyway. This fool thought that I was happhy enough to pay another $5.00 for addition to the gratidude. When I asked the server for my change, he yelled and cussed at me in Chinese with bad attidude.
dont go....avoid at all costs.
this place used be one of our favorite, today however, we have decided to never go again!
we waited about 40 minutes outside, we were seated near a toilet, the owner/waiter came to ask us about our order and became rude and irritated when we asked questions about various items. He made me feel like a nuisance rather than a patron. then when my daughter went to the bathroom, a waitress came a nd took her chair away saying we already had 3 chairs and she was quite rude in her manners too.
The food was very oily, too sweet and the white rice was dry and seemed old.
I dont know how they get away with such a filthy kitchen and bathroom....it is worse than a third world toilet...beleive me it is bad.
dont go...tourists...dont waste your time...please...boycot the place!!
Americanized Chinese Food with Terrible Service - a night not to repeat. My mother and I were visiting San Francisco and wanted to find a great Chinese place in Chinatown. We were shocked to find that we were put at a tiny table pushed up to our neighbors tables on both sides. The menu was extremely limited and even when we did order, two of the dishes that were given to us were the incorrect order, and they despite our protests our waitress told us that they were what we had ordered (when we looked at the menu we were certain we were ordering snow peas, NOT eggplant). Even more shocking to us was that we weren't provided with chopsticks and had to ask - twice - for chopsticks to be brought to our table. In the end our waitress was eating her own dinner and completely neglected us - leaving us at our table for a full 20 minutes after we were finished without clearing our plates or giving us our check. After asking three times for our check we finally stood up to leave, at which point they came rushing over to give us the check at last. An experience we would never want to repeat...
Best chicken so far.
Below average service!!! Tasted like Chinese FAST FOOD.. the restaurant was not full of people. the table was not cleaned and felt sticky to the touch. the elderly chinese man who took our order was impatient and appeared uninterested in our patronage. the waiter who brought our food to the table was pleasant and helpful. the food was simple and decent, nothing special. in fact, it's like fast food chinese. the waitress/cashier was quick to take our money and unfriendly. it was our first visit and definitely our last. by the way, i was guided to this restaurant because of citysearch. nevertheless, i will be much more selective on my next search for the best restaurants.
A San Francisco MUST!.
House of Nanking is one of the best chinese restaurants I've eaten in & I've eaten in China Town restaurants all over the US. This place is authentic! It's a San Fran local hotspot & you have to go early or late because it's so popular at peak time the line is out the door and up the street. I would recommend ignoring the menu & just asking the server to bring you food. Tell them if you want chicken, seafood, etc & if you like it spicy or not, then just sit back & enjoy the feast that is to come! If you're not adventurous this way my suggestion would be to start with the egg rolls (you'll not find these at your local china buffet) or the dumplings, then go for the Nanking special chicken.
Anyway you order, you'll walk out full, happy & you'll be going back! I look forward to this meal above all others when I know I'll be heading out West to San Fran.
Best Chinese I've ever eaten...and I eat a lot of it!. A bus driver suggested that we try this place, and we were SO happy we did. This is by far the best Chinese I've ever eaten. Absolutely loved it!!! The service was great too - love the guy that takes the orders, love that you're not bothered like in other restaraunts. We are now back at home (in Minnesota) and have had cravings for The House of Nan King's food since we left. On a phone call to my husband later that night, I must have raved about it A LOT because he wanted me to bring some home with me!!! Would recommend this place to anybody and everybody that likes Chinese food or is pondering trying it. Thanks so much!
