What People Are Saying About North Star Cafe

In Short – A long, wooden bar dominates the front room, flags and photos hang on the walls. This bar draws locals during the week and turns into a mixed party on weekends. The crowd is decidedly younger and livelier than its old-school North Beach counterpart, Capp's, located across the street. All the creature comforts are here: popcorn machine, jukebox with classic rock, even a disco ball (for decoration only).

Editor's Tips

When to Go:
The bar occasionally hosts live acoustic jams by well-known bands. Sign up at the bar for email alerts. A small cover charge is in effect for these occasions.
Save Money:
The bar pours a mean margarita with Hornitas tequila--only $4 at happy hour (Mon-Fri, 1pm-8pm).
Know Before You Go:
Northstar's previous owner was a fan of the Buffalo Bills. Fans of the football team still turn out to watch games on the smattering of TVs.
Parking:
There is a lot next door and depending on the event, it can sometimes be free.

fun but cramped

by audreyjl at Citysearch

i always like this place, but i've yet to go there when it's not totally packed and hard to move. get there earlier to actually get a spot at the bar or be able to play pool. fun music and fun scene, very collegeish atmosphere.

  • Pros: fun, loud, popular
  • Cons: everyone knows about it

Dan Patrick of ESPN bored us one night with his presence at the bar

by dirkadirka at Citysearch

Northstar Cafe has sponsored our men's fastpitch softball team for the last 4 years, gave us hats this year as well (uh, most bars don't actually give you that much) and the best is a free beer after the game. Most of the players travel in on Thursdays from all over the Bay Area, and to play a competitive game then hang out in a great North Beach spot is really a good thing. Pretty yuppie girls actually talk to us! Thanks Mark!

Chillin'

by elvissinatra at Citysearch

Cool place. Drinks are very reasonable and the staff is really friendly. Not a ton of talent here but some here and there. Overall, a fun place just to chill and have some drinks. It can get pretty crowded around 11-12 on Fridays, Saturdays.

Capp's Corner across the street is even more mellow but it has tons of charm and its worth checking out.

  • Pros: Friendly, Prices, No Attitude

A good bar

by tildenm at Citysearch

Pretty good all-around bar, and if you are in the area, a nice place to stop in. Very good for meeting up before you go to a nearby dance club. The crowd is good, the service is attentive and good.

  • Pros: Crowd, Atmosphere
  • Cons: Parking

a good dive is as good as its regulars

by pizzymcgith at Citysearch

and this place knows it. they make efforts to take care of the folks that are nice to them and others.

just a great dive bar. occasionally has great bands like whiskey pills and the pbr street band - because they're regulars too.
