What People Are Saying About Il Pollaio

In Short – Easy to overlook amid the glut of sophisticated North Beach bistros, this triangle-shaped spot offers informal eating at its finest. The name means "chicken coop" in Italian, and there are no bells or whistles beyond the basics. Chicken, with a straightforward salad or fries, has rarely tasted this good. Regulars come to relax and take in a noontime soccer game on TV. – –
Editor's Tips
- Save Time:
- Call ahead and order to go. Il Pollaio is a great takeout option for white-collar folks who need to hurry back to their cubicles.
- Where to Sit:
- Grab a table by the sliding glass doors, which are opened on warm afternoons, for some quality people-watching.
- The Extras:
- For a spunky, delectable side dish, the marinated eggplant is surprisingly flavorful.
Great chicken

I have no complaints regarding the food. The charbroiled chicken and grilled Italian sausages are moist and flavorful. My only issue is with the service. On more than 3 occasions,i had to wait 15 minutes just to get someone to acknowledge me and it wasnt busy. Now i just prefer to order to go.
- Pros: Excellent,simple food
- Cons: Service needs improvment
The best chicken ever!

Amazing grilled chicken! Crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. It really is the best bang for your buck. We ordered a diet coke, a whole chicken, grilled sausages which came with combination salad of greens, slaw and beans, and we only paid $25.00 including tip and tax. If you love meat, this is the place to be! The decor is quite interesting but I was too busy looking at the chef firing up the grill. The seating is a bit crowded but the general atmosphere is warm and friendly. It's very easy to befriend other diners.
- Pros: Good Value
Consistent value, food, experience.

New hotshot chefs opening boutique eateries in San Francisco with pricey wine lists and elaborately-described entrees should be forced to observe Jose Castelluci's Il Pollaio restaurant in action. Charbroiled chicken, chops and steaks, portions that put other sissy SF "dining experiences" to shame, and quite possibly the best value for your dollar in the entire city make Il Pollaio a rare solid. The setting is informal but clean and warm, and the view of Columbus Avenue can't be beaten. Il Pollaio is an excellent place to dine alone as well, with several small tables affording a view that keeps one's senses as alive as any dinner conversation. Seatingis somewhat limited, but waits are rarely long. Deliciously grilled 1/2 chicken, combo salad or fries and caraffe of decenthouse wine for well under 20 bucks. Something to think about over dessert at "Firefly."
- Pros: Food, Value, Neighborhood
