Best Italian Ice Cream..... EVER. Back when I was in high school there used to be more than one of the Gelato Classico in the City and I think it is a shame this is the last one left, but I am thankful that at least we have it! My favorite flavor is "Copa Mista" which means mixed cup. It is a combination of Pistachio, Vanilla and Chocolate. I have tried over the years to re-create the flavor by ordering all three in one cup at varies ice cream shops around the world (even in Italy!) and it's just not the same. I am pregnant now and woke up this morning thinking I just might die if I don't get my Copa Mista. Lucky for me there is this one last shop left in the City. As soon as it opens, you'll see me there, ordering a cup for now and a couple pints for later!
CLOSED FOR REMODELING. We walked by here on a recommendation and found it closed for remodeling. We'll have to come back later and try it again.
Why isn't this place more crowded?. I really love this place -- it's my favorite secret spot in North Beach. Having worked in an ice cream shop awhile back, I know how crowded a good spot can get when people know about it, but whenever I go here I'm the only one there. Hey, no worries -- just means less wait before some coppa mista or peanut butter chocolate. Great place to go after a meal, or any time, really.
A classic Italian ice cream shop in the heart of North Beach..
In Short
As the name implies, this small, brightly lit North Beach storefront specializes in classic Italian ice cream, otherwise known as gelato. With a consistency much softer than traditional American ice cream, gilato is extremely rich and comes in a wide array of flavors, ranging from dark chocolate and creamy hazelnut to double espresso. The ice cream is served either in small dishes or cones. Fat-free sorbets and sorbettos are also available.
This stuff is too tasty.... ...so why is it that every time i'm there it's empty and they only need one counterperson?? is it because it's above powell near washington square park on union street instead of smack on COLUMBUS like the Ben and Jerry's-- they always surprise me with flavours like pear chardonnay, but you can always rely on chocolate and mocha, too. an excellent pit stop after a long day of sightseeing. texture, flavour and the most superb sugar cones.
molto bene!.
Okeeday,
I've had the "real" stuff in Italy...this is the best I've found state side! Its the texture that really sold me. I ate here several time during our recent trip to 'Frisco and would gladly return.
Tasty. I would say it rates with Italian gelateria's. Similar variety of flavors and one or two are actually better than I have had anywhere in Italy. My wife swears by the Spumoni.
lick it up. What is better than gelato? Not much. This stuff is the closest to the real Italian stuff that can be had in town.
gelato for perverts. all of the flavors that i've tried here have been delicious, particularly espresso bean and blackberry cabernet. also, it's a pretty good value, as a little gelato goes a long way. one caution: one fellow behind the counter, who has served me several times, is either rude or entertaining, depending on your mood. when my friend asked to try the dulce de leche, he stared at her and said "dulce de leche- that is the flavor for perverts"
