In Short
As the grandfather of the city's brewpubs (it was San Francisco's first), this watering hole garners serious respect from beer lovers who have been bellying up to its mahogany bar since 1907. The bar has changed names and owners throughout the years, but the original stained-glass windows, beveled glass mirrors and wood paneling have been meticulously restored. The spittoon and rotating fan--a twirl of brass and palm fronds--add backcountry elements to the speakeasy vibe.

What could be better? This local brewery is a great find. This North Beach spot is a comfort spot for many old and young timers. If you plan ahead you can get a tour of the brewery and a cheap tasting. The staff is very helpful and will steer you in the direction that suits you best. This is a great mellow birthday spot or weekend hangout. It is very easy to spend hours here. It's also close to many bars within walking distance.

Required beer geek stop, highly recommended tourist stop for a "non tourist" experience. What a pub should be - burgers and fries are perfect with the above average brews, the period interior just makes you feel good sitting there, and the staff are friendly and relaxed. You feel that this ought to be your local bar back home. We're from Texas, we always stop in more than once when we're visiting.

I guess if you are reading my reviews you see that I enjoy outside seating. Anyway I used to work down the block and they had dollar beers till six so I was able to get some before the end of happy hour. Great people watching and friendly crowd. O yes, and the beer is quite good.
