I live in the neighborhood and have eaten at Xaio Loong 40 times or so and have yet to have a bad meal. Everything that I have ordered has been very good to excellent. Strongly recommend, nice staff as well!!!!!!!!
West Portal eatery specializes in Westernized riffs on Imperial Chinese cuisine..
In Short
This small restaurant hosts a steady stream of neighborhood locals looking for approachable Szechuan- and Beijing-style fare in a clean and comfortable setting. Conventional dishes such as spicy kung pao chicken, vegetable chow mein and shiitake mushroom beef in a mild house sauce cater to newbies, while more seasoned Chinese fare fans can choose from slightly more creative entrees like chive dumplings with prawns and gao lan, sliced lamb sauteed in garlic and ginger with julienned scallions.
Expensive, not that good, and avoid take out. The food at this place is bland compared to other chinese restaurants. And it is pricey as teh other review notes...dinnre for two is usually close to $40 when our average is usually $30.00...and that's for take out, so if you add drinks to that...you get the picture. I also ordered takeout from this place only to find a piece of GLASS in my food...needless to say, I have not been back. They get a thumbs down on cleanliness, quality of food and prices.
Finally, a clean chinese restaurant.. I go to lunch here at least once a week with my co-workers. They have a lunch menu with about 30 items to choose from. Most items on the lunch menu are either $5.99 or $6.99. Which is average for a chinese lunch. Once you sit down, they serve you a small bowl of soup. It's a different soup everyday, usually a variation of vegetable broth. The lunch plates also comes with steam white rice and a slice of orange. The dinner menu is pricey compared to other chinese restaurants. Most items are $10 and up. This tiny place serves average chinese food, but is a lot cleaner than most chinese restaurant. The servers speaks good english and very attentive.
