There's been few changes since 1931 (besides the prices, anyway) at this friendly, old-time candy shop for sweet-toothed West Portal residents.. In a city where storefronts change hands as quicky as the money that keeps them prospering (or, you know, doesn't), it's reassuring to see a small business who has made it work--for more than 70 years. This West Portal relic of the 1930s, when the name "Shaw's" actually carried some weight, has upped the cost of a gumball or a truffle since its heyday, but still serves up the same sugary treats with the same friendly service. They don't have much competition in the neighborhood for those looking for an after-school cone (Mitchell's ice cream supplies the flavors) or shopping break-worthy bag of gummi bears, and if locals continue to support the mom-n-pop shop, it will likely stay that way.

Cute shop, gourmet candy, awesome ice cream. Shaw's is an adorable local shop with elaborate holiday-themed window displays and an assortment of cute little gifts (picture frames, themed salt and pepper shakers, etc). The candy is to die for and you can mix and match your own gift boxes. I go mainly for the ice cream: they have a great selection of Mitchell's flavors. Located on West Portal, it's the perfect place to stop after dinner, a movie, or while running errands.

The VERY BEST candy in the WORLD. The storefront is charming enough...but wait until you taste the candy! I felt like I was transported to Pleasantville. Douglas Shaw's tradition still lives on in this store. It's great to see an orginal, local business kept alive and full of magic.
