Since 1967, the Bay Area's most important playwrights' theater has been doing a bang-up job of premiering exciting new plays..
In Short
The theater established a national reputation when playwright Sam Shepard and director Robert Woodruff worked here in the '70s. Economic woes followed, but the organization--currently under the artistic leadership of Larry Eilenberg--is on a roll these days, constantly commissioning and developing cutting-edge new work for the main stage. With two 160-seat adjoining spaces in bucolic Fort Mason, the Magic often saves one space for like-minded small local or visiting companies.
