Editorial Review for Comet Club – by Catherine Wargo
In Short
Imbibers enter the darkened doorway of the club and find their way to a white leather banquette with enough room for a substantial group of friends. Red candles reminiscent of backyard barbecues provide some of the only light in this entirely red-and-black-decorated space. The back of the long and narrow bar has a space for dancing (replete with disco ball) to nostalgic hits of the 70s and 80s, but weekdays bring a more laid-back neighborhood experience.

It's been about six months since I went to the Comet Club, mostly because I got five bones in my face broken there. I went on a crowded saturday night and it seemed like a typical crowded, sweaty S.F. bar that overcharged for drinks. Towards the end of the night, I got popped in the face by some guy I didn't know with a fun trip to the emergency room and surgery shortly after. The "bouncers" didn't see it happen even though I was about 5 feet from the front door and didn't stop the guy that I pointed out. Even worse though was the response from the bar manager when my friends went back looking for who did it. He said that I had been punched outside and it wasn't their issue. I've heard second-hand accounts of other people being randomly assaulted in the nearby vicinity. Enter at your own caution.
Pros: It sells liquor
Cons: People there suckerpunch you for no reason

I was visited friends in the Richmond area for the weekend and we cruised over to the Marina. We were planning on going to Matrix across the street and just ended up staying at the Comet Club. The drinks were strong and the bartenders were friendly. We met girls right away that were down to dance. It was a good mix of locals and people from all around the city. The music wasn't just the same mainstream stuff you hear everywhere else. I thought we just went on a lucky night. Two nights later we went back and it was even better. I recommend this place to anyone who wants a mix of a trendy nightclub and a local dive bar.
Pros: Social scene, music, service
Cons: Small dance floor
