Editorial Review for Alegrias Food From Spain – by Eve Kushner

The Scene
Unobtrusive Spanish servers keep producing small plates of delicious food, and sangria flows freely--it doesn't get much better than this. The decor is eclectic, featuring walls studded with paintings, mirrors, tiles and pottery. A ham atop the bar also commands attention.

The Food
Diners could visit myriad times and order only tapas, never pushing onward to paellas or the other main dishes, which are excellent but less special than the appetizers. Potato-based offerings (including a moist Spanish tortilla and salsa-topped patatas bravas) are comforting, flavorful mainstays. Delicate seafood starters like fried calamari and sauteed scallops hit just the right notes. The chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce is an express ticket to nirvana.

I was pleased with the tapas at Alegrias. My friends and I got the rabbit, which was good and tender. The papas were not dry and were fried just crispy enough. The salmon was also good, soft and well-seasoned. The sangria was not all that remarkable, however. For the most part the desserts were not notable, though the crepes with caramel were delicious, properly sweet and the caramel was thick enough.

Pros: Ambiance, Food
