Tips for Gatip Classic Thai Cuisine

November 11, 2008

The friendly service and exciting twists on classic Thai cuisine keeps patrons coming back for more from this Marina restaurant.. "Gatip" is a container for sticky rice, a staple in Thai cuisine, besides which this laid back restaurant offers spicy curries, classic Thai dishes and a killer lunch special. Ornate statutes of Buddha, dragons, elaborate wood cravings and candles fill every inch of the dining room. The misspellings and faded and ripped menu pages, make this restaurant more endearing, and despite these shortcomings, the chef knows how to dish it out. The Gang Garee yellow vegetable curry is a winner and in a close second is the ginger chicken. Other hits are the chili eggplant and of course the Pad Thai. Save room for the fried banana and coconut ice cream, whose cold sweetness make the perfect end to a spicy meal.

BEST THAI IN TOWN. MY GOD!

Why, is this place always empty?

Me and my husband was sceptic for the restaurant because of its always empty, and it looks cheap, and is on Lombard street...

We ordered Basil chicken and BBQ Beef and holy shitballs... it was definatly without any doubts the best thai we ever had!

It tastes original, not like other thai restaurants.... when you got the bite in your mouth...it was like heaven....

Another thing, its ridicously cheap! 7.95 for most dishes, but its worth so much more!

The staff is really cute and friendly! Always with a big smile!

Other things worth trying out, is the curries, cashew nut chicken, garlic chicken and oh so much more!

This is a little place that deserves more customers! Its so much ebtter than the nices, more expensive thai's!!

Fresh, rich food and gracious hosts. We were good and hungry when we stumbled upon Gatip. We got there at 9:30 and they close at 10. The hostesses and our waiter were all very welcoming. Our veggie spring roll app was fresh and the peanut dipping sauce was stellar. My Pad Thai and my partner's Pad See Yu noodles were both cooked just right and very fresh. Only wished the Pad See Yu would have had more broccoli. We licked our plates clean and even though it was well after ten when we finished and we were the only remaining customers, our waiter (may have been the owner) offered to buy us another beer. We left very satisfied.

Surprisingly good. We were very skeptical about this place. We just moved to the neighborhood and noticed that this place was almost always empty. We just movedhere from NYC and love Thai food so decided to try it one night. Everything we ordered terrific. It was take-out so I can't speak to the service except that they were very friendly when we picked it up. We had the Tom Yum soup (very tasty, but not spicy enough), the Chinese eggplant shrimp (excellent), and the ghang panang chicken (really really good). The ghang panang was the only truly spicy dish - next time we wil ask them to kick it up a notch - but everything was very flavorful and fresh and tasty. I'm happy to read that this place has been around awhile because the fact that it is always empty makes us nervous - but maybe they do a mean take-out or delivery service. Please - check this place out if you are in the neighborhood.

wonderful. I've been a customer of Gatip's since I was born, my family gets their food all the time. The service may not be the best, but the food is very good. Don't be so hard on this restaurant they've been in business for quite a long time. I personally love the Red chicken curry with steamed rice and fried banana for dessert.

Gatip - doesn't get it!. Mediocre food with poor service. No sense of Customer Service from Top Down! Everything tastes the same...

Eh. Better Thai same area @ Yukol. Pad thai is quite bad - an unappealing flavor permeates it. The lemongrass soup is just ok. Larb was very good. Delivery area is too small to be useful and the delivery folks forgot stuff and wouldn't return with it.
