Editorial Review for Mezzanine – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
The space merges warehouse minimalism with sophisticated technology. Inside, clubgoers find a cavernous main room, elevated stage that hosts DJs and live bands, and plush mezzanine lounges, including a glassed-in room. Up to a thousand partygoers can fill the space, boogying the night away on the cushioned dance floor, sprawling out on upholstered benches and ottomans in one of the loft-like upstairs lounges and taking drink breaks at one of the five full-service bars.

The Draw
The upstairs VIP lounge features dressing rooms and bottle service for the big-spender crowd. One of the upper-level lounges sports soundproofed walls and a separate DJ, so revelers can party far from the crowds below. But it's not just all dancing, all the time: The owners have added fashion shows and multimedia art events to the calendar.

The best part about the mezzanine is that it has all the bands that you want to hear that aren't playing anywhere else in northern California, and that's it. They sell too many tickets which makes the security eager to put people out on the street. The stage, which is far too small for the size of the venue is smushed into the far corner of the floor and is set too low for anyone farther back than the first 5 rows (or not watching from the distant balcony) to actually see anything. Drinks are expensive for what you get, but the low cost tickets offset that. After all is said, all I really want is a decent view of my band and some elbow room. I would not recommend this venue unless you know your band will not sell the place out or they are not playing any other venues in norCal.

Pros: Great lineups, shows you won't see anywhere else

Cons: The stage and floor setup, too many patrons, security over eager to remove patrons

I've been going here for years and until last week had a very high opinion of the club. They must have gotten three times as many security guards and they have them patrol the entire club. They shined a flashlight in my eyes three times during the night because my eyes were closed. I've never had this happen before at any club and really hope they change back to leaving people alone. They also harassed a guy because he fell asleep on the couch. They told him to 'get a hotel, get up and walk around or go home'. This man paid money to be in the club until it closed. There is nothing on the ticket that says you must stay awake. I'm sad that they've taken a turn for the worse. Maybe they'll come around once they notice a drop in attendance.

Pros: Everything but the security rounds / flashlights in the face

Cons: Security rounds / flashlights in the face
