Manager and Staff are RUDE – This place is overated and the staff is completely rude. We went on a Saturday afternoon for some drinks and appetizers and there were not any tables available in the bar area so we sat at the bar and waited for a table to open. When we entered the resturant there wasn't a Hostess or any "rules" posted about seating. So when a table opened up we moved over to it and then another couple entered the resturant at the same time. Evidently they wanted to sit in the bar area so the so called manager Daniel Burnz told us we would have to move, put our name on a list or just leave. He was completely rude even though we had already be there an hour or more. He told us we could only sit there if we order food - so we did and another table open up for the other couple. The other couple was very apologitic but the manager never apologize to us for treating up so rudely. He was more concerned with being then right then what is best for the business. Overall, food was average, the staff is rude and so I will not go there again. Please make sure to pass this along - not worth your time!!!!
Great Bar and Amazing Veggies – The atmosphere makes this place. The food was delicious and had a large selection of excotic beverages. They do take reservations which will certainly cut down your wait time especially on the weekends. I highly recommed the green beans if you are vegtable fan.
doesn't live up – eating here the day after having dinner at the slanted door was a big no-no. i don't think there was anything they could have done or served to even be close to what i wanted. the food wasn't bad - it just didn't stand out. their spicy shrimp appetizer was all i can remember. crowded tables in this large restaurant made for a loud experience
Fun atmosphere – This is a fun little place on Union Street. It's a cute restaurant, the food is good, and there are tv's at the bar (for all you sports freaks). Sometime it takes a while to get seated but it's worth it.
It is however a little overpriced for what it is. I've had better take-out especially in our town where there is an abundance of Asian food. Nonetheless, it is one of the only Asian restaurants on Union St. (I think), but I do prefer E & O Trading Co. over this place...same kind of feel, deco...but food is slightly better.
Overrated and Hostess was RUDE – I agree with the two posts below. This place is overrated. I've definitely been to better restaurants in SF. If the food was just mediocre, the hostess that seated us was just plain rude and snobby! Not only did she pass right in front of us w/o saying excuse me when we were entering the restaurant, she made it a point to tell us we were early for our reservations (w/ a fake smile of course!). Mediocre food and rude service is a BAD combination. Hopefully, they'll replace this hostess with a much more polite and genuinely friendly one. I have to say that we got good service from our waitress; however, we were turned off right when we entered the restaurant. Needless to say, I won't be going back. What a shame...I'd heard such good things about this place. Save your money and go elsewhere.
pan asian food okay – Surprisingly enough, this Asian fusion was interestingly tasty. Appetizer was a samoas, which wasn't bad. Some folks would enjoy the mango chutney but I'm not fond of sweet dips. Emerald fire noodle with mint, Thai basil - was a bit bland, and sweet.
Wok seared galanga beef filet, crispy yams & cress salad - Excellent dish
Szechuan green beans - Excellent dish
Although, I do wonder if there was any MSG in there because I found myself craving for water when I was heading home.
So NOT recommended! – Anyone who is posting this retaurant as "Highly recommended" clearly has no idea what quality cuisine is! I don't know what it was but the food was terrible, flavorless, and bland.....I think it's all the hype people are giving this place. I just don't get it. I would NOT go back there as San Francisco has too many fantastic restuarants to try! (Even Tai-Chi take out is better than this place)....good place to get some eye candy though but that's about it!
snobby – I made a reservation for 6:30 and the three of us were promptly seated at a table right in front of the kitchen. I saw five empty booths around us and thought it'd be more comfortable since we wanted to have a little more privacy. I asked the waiter if we could sit in one of the empty booths, and he checked with the hostess who came over to say that they were reserved for later reservations. We proceeded to have dinner WITH dessert (nothing which blew me away, btw), and by the time we left, those booths were still empty! It was so rude. I called later and it turns out they don't even allow you to reserve the booths! The food is okay, the waitstaff mediocre, but that kind of attitude will definitely prevent me from going back.
Pretty slick spot – pretty good spot overall, dinner was good, drinks were good and place was hoping with a young crowd having a great time. our waiter was soso and didnt impress me too much, but that shouldnt stop you from going. i will definitely go back again
Great place to dine on Union St. – I've been to Betelnut plenty of times and love it on every visit. I'd recommend the pork spare ribs and orange firecracker chicken. Nice ambience, great food!!!
