The Scene
A dark-wood interior gives an intimate, homey feel to this modest tavern. Grad student-types relax at the bar, two booths or the lantern-lit, covered, smoking patio in the back. The walls are littered with blackthorn walking sticks, old instruments and well-lit dart boards, while three TVs typically show sports or news.
The Draw
Live music--from Irish and bluegrass to funk--is played almost every night and there's rarely a cover charge. The bartenders are very friendly and when it's slow during weekdays, they have time to chat and experiment with new drinks. During the weekend, moving through the crowd is difficult as the middle-aged barflies and hordes of UCSF students fight for the bartenders' attention.

This is the Pub where you have to call the neighborhood bar. Everynight there is something special going on. I have been going to this spot for over 5 years, and always recommend it to friends. It is a must to check out!

Blackthorn is not a bar you go out of your way for, but is a strong asset to the neighborhood. While waiting 45 minutes for a table at San Tung, it is a great place to have a pre-chinese food beer. Wednesday nights feature a great weekly house band and many nights there are interesting acts at the mic. (Particularly, an eerily identical Johnny Cash.) Prices are average, patio is pretty big and the service is not the fastest, but is friendly.

Check out the Blackthorn Tavern either Thursday or Saturday night. They feature great drink specials on Thursday. Thursday night is "Colledge Night w/ DJ Trip" . DJ Trip is the former resident DJ from the Holy Cow's Thursday night party. He blends a mix of 80's, 90's, Hip hop, R&B, House, Current Dance, and Rock. They also have killer drink specials, like a pre-determined $1 Beer and buy one well drink get one free. By far the best party in SF on a Thursday or Saturday night. The women are hot the bar staff is friendly and the music rocks.
