To step into Sukhothai is to be surrounded by kitschy, colorful contents of the country's popular night markets. The silk-and-lace tablecloths, teak statutes, ornate gold wall hangings and various other Thai tchotchke are dripping from every surface, leaving diners dazzled by the decor and distracted from the menu: a standard list of fairly authentic Thai dishes mixed with a few Americanized favorites. Those who have traveled to the country's north (the city of Sukhothai, a World Heritage Site of ruins, is about six hours north of Bangkok) will recognize dishes like papaya salad, laab (ground chicken or pork with mint leaves and chilies) and barbecued calamari or meatballs.

Not the best Thai food to be found in the city. They have lunch specials for around $8 which is a bargain. Comes with a cup of hot & sour cabbage soup, one appetitzer (choice of fish cake, egg roll, beef/chicken satay, etc), rice and 2 entrees. The chicken satay was a dried piece of chicken breast on a skewer. The peanut sauce was watery and blandish. I had the eggplant/pork which was OK, the chicken & peanut sauce over spinach was better. The Thai iced tea had mostly ice and too much cream, could barely taste the tea. I had leftovers and asked for a takeout container. The waitstaff brought a large coffee cup with lid! Had to ask him again for a proper box. I'd rather go down the street to Marnee Thai for better tasting food.

While the server was very nice, he didn't seem to know much about waiting tables, he brought out the wrong dish more than once and didn't realize until we did. The dishes we ordered were not accurately described in the menu and we were disappointed with most of the things we ordered. Their curry was pretty good though. It wasn't the worst Thai food but in the Sunset you have better options.

The food was ok. The service wasn't that great from the beginning of the meal, and ended with the worse. After we had paid and tipped our bill and gone outside of the restaurant, the hostess came running after us asking why we tipped them so little. Instead of gracefully receiving what they deserved for tips, they embarrassed us publicly. Needless to say, that would be the last time we will dining at that restaurant.
