This love-it-or-hate-it grocery cooperative in the outer avenues wins fans with a spectacular bulk section, but occasionally makes enemies due to surly service.. Those who don't live in the largely residential wasteland that is the Outer Sunset wouldn't understand the elation one finds at being able to buy groceries without hoofing it to the nearest Safeway (nearly 20 blocks away) or driving to the closest Trader Joe's (all the way in Daly City). This worker-owned food shop along a revitalized section of Judah Street is just such an oasis--an eco-conscious, organic market that stocks bin-upon-bin of bulk goods, a tiny produce selection and select frozen and canned goods. You won't find Kraft or Heinz here, but there's plenty of Boca and Amy's to go around. Also, they've got pans and juicers and the odd cookbook, which makes up for the fact that there's not a cooking supply store or hardware shop for miles.
Who doesn't love a co-op?. Other Aves makes it easy to support my local grocery store. The volunteer staff are surprisingly efficient, and the place has a good selection packed into a tiny space. Good bulk food options and some fun knick-knacks. Don't forget to check out the cut flowers.
