Editorial Review for Yum Yum Fish – by Amy Westervelt

In Short
Devoted fans of ultra-fresh sushi wait for one of the restaurant's three tables or crowd the take-out counter for excellent fish and bizarrely low prices at this market-meets-eatery. Though sushi offerings are traditional at first glance, a closer look reveals inventive combinations such as the papaya salmon roll. Vegetarians can choose from a number of fish-less nigiri or maki, such as the V8 (shiitake, cucumber, avocado, squash, burdock, sprouts, spinach and takuwan).

Insider Tips

Where to Sit

If there's no wait (a rarity), take advantage of the opportunity to take one of the three tiny tables available, a great spot to spy on people buying sashimi-grade fish of every kind, and listen to the quirky French fish monger talk about his favorite subject: French soccer.

When to Go

The best bet for eating in is lunch on a weekday; weekends are packed, and on weekday nights the market closes fairly early, but takeout is always a good option.

Know Before You Go

Last call for sushi is 7:15pm.

This place is a must if you live in the sunset or richmond districts. The fish is always fresh and delicious, and if you order by the pound (or half, or quarter pound) it is so cheap it's practically daylight robbery. seriously, a pound of salmon for ~$11? Plus $2 for them to slice it for you. The only con to this place is that I'd say only ~75% of the time is the fish amazing. Don't get me wrong, the other 25% of the time it's good, just not amazing like the other times. Also, sometimes the cuts of fish still have a little bit (tiny sliver really) of skin on it which I don't like. As I almost always order take-out I will in these cases slice off the skin at home. Regardless, this place is amazing and one of only 3-4 regular places I would eat at while living in the outer Richmond district. Enjoy! And be willing to give it more than one chance

Pros: fresh fish, cheap

Cons: little bit inconsistent but worth it!

i simply wanted fresh tuna so i could prepare some tuna tartar tonight. i called 30 minutes before hand to ask if their tuna was fresh enough so i could make my tartar tonight and when it was shipped to them. yes, and this morning. pleased, i picked some up and brought it home to find it SMELLY AND SOFT. i returned to their fish market 20 minutes later for a refund and the owner was a RUDE RUDE RUDE RUDE, telling me that he can't sell it to another customer so he wouldn't give me my money back. he said that he didn't know what I did to it because i'd taken it out of his fish market. frankly, he shouldn't have sold it to anyone else. it WASN'T FRESH as he told me on the phone an hour earlier. the sushi is fair, but the market part is unacceptable and the owner's customer service crappy. i'll never go back even though i used to like them.

Pros: cheap

Cons: cheap
