Editorial Review for La Vie Vietnamese Restaurant – by Citysearch Staff
In Short
Simple, clean decor with Asian instruments hanging on the walls sets a classy, low-key tone. The kitchen turns out a roster of predictable but solid favorites, including minced shrimp on sugarcane, pan-fried noodle dishes, clay pot cuisine and fondue beef that diners cook themselves in an aromatic vinegar broth of lemongrass and ginger. Vegetarian options go well beyond a mixed veggies plate with options like sautéed eggplant simmered in coconut milk and curry sauce.

I've lived in San Francisco's Richmond district for several years, and La Vie is by far one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Home to an array of Vietnamese/French fusion cuisines and a Hot & Sour soup that is simply to die for, La Vie produces high-class plates at prices that are affordable to the average restaurant-goer. Beyond this, the staff is always friendly and keep customers well attended to.

A few of my personal favorites:
--Hot and Sour soup (available with catfish, prawns, or both)
--Vegetarian Salad (has little crispy tofu strips, and the dressing is awe-inspiring to say the least)
--Dungeoness Crab (large enough to feed several, with a good handful of recipes. I've tried them all and have never been let down.)

Highly recommended!
Pros: Excellent food, Affordable prices, Friendly Staff, Never too crowded
Cons: Makes my home cooking look like McDonalds

We walked in for lunch during the weekend. I wanted to try La Vie because I've heard good things about the food. The place was empty. However, when we walked in, the disgruntled waitstaff saw us, but did not want to stop reading his newspaper to show us a table or address us. We waited for a minute or two and then left. If the waitstaff is that disgruntled in the front of the restaurant, I wonder what is going on in the back. I rarely will comment about rude service, normally commenting on the food, but when it's this bad, it's inexcusable.
Pros: Several people in the neighborhood have recommended
Cons: Inexcusably rude service made me lose confidence in restaurant as a whole
