At night, boisterous 20- and 30-somethings fill the red vinyl booths and a small bar gets crowded quickly. With fresh ingredients and the best selection of tequila this side of the Rio Grande, Tommy's makes a mean margarita. The vast Mexican menu includes combination platters as well as Yucatecan specialties like poc chuc (broiled pork served in roasted tomato sauce).

Decent margharita's. The food is fairly ordinary. However, the portions are really gigantic. The atmosphere is relaxed while still quite loud/lively. The staff is nice. If you just want a place to drink, have decent Mexican food, and hang out at with friends, than this is a great place to go. Plus, it's one of the Richmond's longstanding jewels. So, if you want to support the neighborhood while having fun with friends, then this is a nice place to visit.

This place has the worst food I've eaten in San Francisco, bar none--overcooked, tasteless slop. Unfriendly, non-English-speaking waiters who couldn't get an order right if they actually tried. Filthy interiors (sticky, nasty tables and dirty floors). Worst of all, the entire restaurant smells like a dirty bathroom (mostly because it does indeed sport filthy, smelly bathrooms). The bathroom odor hits you the moment you walk in the door. Perhaps this is a good drinking place, but it most definitely is not a good eating place. After a few drinks, maybe the odors of urine and filth wafting through the restaurant no longer matter so much? There are SO many better choices for good Mexican food in the city than this--almost any place in the mission, actually. As a non-drinker, this place has absolutely nothing to recommend it. Avoid at all costs.

Tommy's has a tequila education and tasting program called the tequila PhD--and with their selection, quality, and knowledge, they HAVE the right to administer this degree! Oh yeah...and I hold the degree :) The owner's predilection for El Tesoro is justified. Hacienda de los Diaz, 1800, and Herradura are also amazing--have a shot of each with your meal, and a margarita with whatever's in the well. The food is very good; the tequila-culture gets this place five stars, and absolutely excellent food would earn it a sixth (if that rating could be given), but...again, the food is quite good.
