o.k. food, but better Japanese food on same block. Unfortunately, the food at Kitaro has really gotten worse. The fish is not sushi quality and it is not cut properly. It is cheap though, so if that is what you want........ I decided to try the new Japanese restaurant a couple of doors away (Cocoro) and it was very good. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar. It cost a bit more, but the fish is fresh and they have actual sushi chefs. Kitaro needs to buy better quality fish if they continue to serve sushi!

Perfect for those on a budget!. I am a true sushi fanatic! I have tried sushi all over the US and I must admit that considering its indecently cheap prices Kitaro is undeniably the best. Pound for pound, this sushi beats all of them! I tried it all, the seaweed salad - $1 plate, fresh and crispy, baked mussels - $2 plate, creamy, delicious and worth ruining your diet for, fresh tuna and avocado rolls - $1.50 for a plate of 4, yummy, I even tried the ikura, salmon roe, which was pretty great considering I paid $2 for 2 rolls brimming with tasty golden salmon caviar that would have cost me $5-7 anywhere else. Go early, I did and I beat the rush and got a great little spot immediately. Just don't go if you're on a diet, you cannot resist the cheap price. I paid $15 for a feast that usually costs me $40 + tip! Awesome! I definitely recommend it and I will be taking all my visitors on a budget there to pig out!

cheap but not dilicious enough. i went there on saturday for lunch.

i chose a lunch plate with chiken teriyaki and veggie and shrimp tempura.

The plate was big, but it didn't have the "japanese style" although it IS the J-restaurant.

the decroration was nice and fully furnished.

good serivce and a little crowed.

i recommended the lunch plates. Udon is not referred.

i prefered to have noodles instead of udon over there.

if u go to japan town or u know the cooks are REAL japanese, then choose Udon

You Get What You Pay For. If a fast, cheap sushi meal is what you seek, you would be hard pressed to do better than Kitaro. The quality is a half notch above what you might find at a high end grocery store but overall it is enjoyable food as long as you set your expectations accordingly. Large eaters may even want to consider ordering two set dinners. With prices barely above $10 on anything on the menu including full set dinners, you can afford to gorge yourself silly at Kitaro.

Cheap-Yes Food-No Thank you. This is one of those places that you get what you pay for. We were excited by the reasonably priced Japanese food, but the quality was poor. I ordered vegtarian sushi and could not finish it....it just didn't taste right. My husband's seafood rolls were OK. The tempura was average and gioza were below average. I would save up a little and spend a little more for a decent kappa maki roll....I didn't think you could screw those up.

Cheap Sushi. This place has a limited sushi menu, but the sushi is somehwat above average, and the prices are really really chep. It is in a boring area of town, but there are so many BAD sushi places in the city. This is the best tasting cheap sushi restaraunt in town. Lunch boxes, shashimi and nigiri are very decent, and a few rolls are quite decent as well. Sashimi appetizer for 8 bucks, rainbow roll for 5, ....how can you go wrong? Decent service, clean place, no wait, not crowded, etc.

Great Sushi in the Richmond. The wife and I have been comong here for years after a friend took us to Kitaro. THe Sushi is great for the price, always fresh and the service is good. Parking is a challenge so either walk if you live in the area or come early to look for parking.

dine in ok, but not for to go. last time we ordered some sushi (togo) and noodle for our dinner. when i got home, i found out that they didn't even gave me any soy sauce, wasabi, no folk or chopsticks. dine in is ok, hot food are way better than sashimi.........

not recommended. This is definitely cheap japanese food but not very good in terms of quality. The sashimi came out looking old and the sushi looked like it had been sitting for a long time. Probably will not go back unless really broke.

Get the cooked food itmes..... Basically you get what you pay for. If you want cheap eats, espcially cheap sushi, cheap bento boxes. I normally come here when I just want some cheap japanese food. They're quality of fish is just not good, that is why I get the non raw items. Their tempura, tonkatsu, chicken karrage is pretty good tho. I don't know if you can mess up on deep fried food. Their proportions are also very big, so it fills you up good. If you live in the neighborhood, they have coupons for sushi plates, I order those when I don't want to cook and want cheap fast eats.
