DON'T GO - Never Had Such Poor Service – DON'T GO - Great place that has gone to HELL.
Hey Bill, Questions for you:
1. You know that sign on the wall that says, "If we don't take care of the customer, someone else will?" Well, you were right!
2. Is your joint a place for your cooks to
a) burn your customer's food while watching soccer, or
b) pay attention to the grill so they can attempt to hang onto your slipping reputation? P
REASONS NOT TO GO and why there are way fewer people who go there than I used to see:
1. Poor Quality Food
used to be great, now it's either
Overcooked -- chicken especially, and medium rare requests come back overly well done -- or
Undercooked -- my fries were barely unfrozen.
Shakes used to be thick, now are runny.
2. Unacceptable Customer "Service"
Choosing the Cook's TV time as more important than the customers' needs...
I love the mature staff there, but the new kids there ruined our experience. Read on.
i.e. Tonight was the NBA Finals. I've gone to Bill's for basketball for over a year, as we don't have a TV. Tonight, we were watching the game, sitting right in front of the TV, chatting to our server about it the entire night -- he even told us that the book keeper's uncle is Jason Kidd.
After our server left, the new young waitress told me, in the middle of the tied-score 4th quarter of the most important game of the year, which my girlfriend and I were watching intently, said "SORRY, WE'RE TURNING THE CHANNEL."
"You're kidding, right," I asked.
"No, the cooks want to watch soccer."
I look at the cooks, and I get a confrontational stare down from one of them -- a guy who has his job because I paid for his poor cooking. A threatening look to a customer??
"Are you serious?"
"Yeah, the cooks complained to the manager. They want to watch the game."
"You've got to be kidding me. The other night someone wanted to watch the Giants game, and the waitress said that whoever's there first establishes what game's being played, and now you're telling me the cook decides what to watch over you customer? In the fourth quater of a NBA Finals Game?"
"They want to watch the Gold Cup."
"We've been customers buying food all night and done so for almost two years, for the sole purpose of watching this game and you're going to turn it off so your cooks can watch soccer?"
"Hey, don't give me attitude, I'm trying to be nice to you," she yelled right over me.
"Nice? Actions speak louder than words. We gotta go. Now. And we're never coming back. And we're going to tell everyone else what happened. Gimme the check."
And that's what I'm doing.
I paid, left a good tip for the guy who originally served us (who we'll really miss), and we got the hell out of there, to the nearest place showing the game, ten blocks away. And we're never coming back. I left my credit card there and just canceled it, because I will never set foot in there again.
In an economy where only the best will rise to stay afloat, this place has decided to hire children as cooks and chose not to train their staff about the very basics of customer relations.
Read your own sign, Bill.
P.S. Mavs won. Sorry Lebron!
BILL'S PLACE ROCKS! – These are some oooold reviews! Friends & family went to Bill's a couple of weeks ago & it's was fantastic! The food was great, everything was clean, the staff was wonderful, no problems here.
My son was a huge In 'n' Out Burger fan until we went to Bill's Place. Now, he won't go anywhere else for burgers & fries.
I highly recommend Bill's Place, sure it looks a bit shambled but it's worth the food & the fun feel of the place.
Good fries, BAD SERVICE – The food at Bill's place is that of your typical modern 50s style diner. The prices are obviously not that of the '50s with a cup of coffee or tea costing 2 dollars or a scoop of ice cream with your pie being an extra $1.95.
With that said, the portions are decent, but VERY greasy. The hamburger buns are very cheap and easily get damp and spongy, falling apart the minute you pick them up. The fries are actually very good and seem to be made from fresh potatoes unlike the reheated frozen ones that infiltrate your chain restaurants.
The service is awful! Once they take your order, good luck ever getting their attention for things you might need (like an actual fork with your meal or a drink/coffee refill) and they will NEVER ask you "Will there be anything else?" before laying your check on the table while you are still eating. Guess they don't care to push those classic milkshakes and sundaes. Basically, once they set your food down, you won't be hearing from them again, and if you get up to grab them yourselves, they will give you attitude.
Overall, the food is a bit above average but its not worth the price and bad service. Maybe stick with take out if you live in the neighborhood.
cockaroaches no extra charge – BILL'S PLACE USED TO BE MY FAVORITE BURGER PLACE - NOT ANY MORE.
MY MAN, MY DAUGHTER AND I WENT FOR DINNER SAT. 7/26/08, WHEN MY DAUGHTER AND I WENT TO THE BATHROOM SHE WAS TERRIFIED AND SCREAMED "MOMMY WHAT IS THAT?" AS I LOOKED UP I WAS DISGUSTED TO REALIZE IT WAS A COCKAROACH. WE TOLD OUR WAITRESS AND SHE DID NOTHING. AFTER A VERY LONG TIME AND US TELLING HER TO GO HANDLE THE LARGE COCKAROACH AGAIN, SHE SENT A KID IN THERE TO TAKE CARE OF IT. HE GRABBED AN APRON OFF A COUNTER TO GET THE COCKAROACH OFF THE WALL AND STOMPED IT ON THE GROUND, THEY NEVER CLEANED IT UP JUST LEFT IT THERE(EEEWWWW). EVEN WORSE HE PUT THE APRON BACK ON THE COUNTER. THE WAITRESS EVEN LAUGHED ABOUT IT WITH THE COOK AFTER WE REMINDED HER ABOUT IT. WE'LL NEVER GO AGAIN.
Great neighborhood Hamburger joint – This place is definitely a joint, but I use joint in the most complimentary way. This is a down and dirty - go in your holiest jeans kinda place that serves up great burgers, fries, onion rings and shakes. Great place if you've had a lousy day and the only thing that will make you feel better is saturated fat.
Friendly environs and great burgers make this a Richmond family favorite. – In Short
The bustling interior is built like a classic New York City diner--complete with a long row of vinyl counter seats. Only a pleasant outdoor patio betrays its California locale, along with a creative list of gourmet burgers named after local celebrities. An offbeat, presidential dinner plate collection hangs on one wall, and incongruous crystal chandeliers lend a quirky, vintage atmosphere. Old-fashioned breakfasts, sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, fountain drinks and other diner treats complete the menu.
POOR SERVICE – Unfortunately for this Diner, the Food is allright if you like the 50's diner style. What absolutely kills this place is the service. We live in the neigborhood and consistently receive god-awful slow, incompetent service there, so much so that we stopped going. The food isn't good enough to justify the bad service. Fire some of your waitstaff and they would be consistent with past reviews.
Bill's Place memories – My Dad was born and raised in SF. He would treat us to a burger at Bill's, and we would sit in the back patio. There was 4 of us, very busy household. Bill's was one of the few places children were welcome at the time. I would take HIM in the later years, just before he passed away we had a burger together. He was on oxygen and using a wheelchair, so we ate in the truck. It tasted just a good as I remembered.
Juicy Memories! – Bill's Place, by far, has the best burgers I have ever eaten! They are thick, juicy, flavorful! It's tucked away on wonderfully, eclectic Clement Street! Bill's place was our favorite spot many moons ago when we all needed that "study break" while attending USF! Don't miss Bill's Place!
bad burgers... nice patio – Bills has lost it... a slew of toppings to choose from... but the beef just doesn't cut it... the back patio is nice... but not enough to make me a regular...
