In Short – Those in the know head for the red awning covered in Cyrillic with "Russian Bakery" printed down its side for a huge selection of baked goods. Colorful meringues greet customers as they head in for beef, cabbage or cheese piroshskis. The cream-filled napoleons, poppy-seed pastries and dense squares of fruit and nut cake make for a delicious sweet snack.

Editor's Tips

Know Before You Go:
The bakery will heat up your piroshki, making them a tasty "fast food."
The Extras:
Moscow and Tbilisi also does catering.

This bakery is ASTOUNDING! I fell in love with this place. Mouth watering food and pasteries. Service is friendly. Anytime I come to visit, this is my first place to stop for good and filling food!

  • Pros: Wonderful service and helpful.
  • Cons: Hard to find a parking spot.

Georgian bakery

I go there for the poppy seed bread. It is delicious, not expensive and keeps long enough so go for the large one. And if you speak a couple of words in Russian ("spasiba" is helpful), one of the girls behind the counter might even smile.

This is a FANTASTIC bakery

by karalyeva at Citysearch

This bakery is really very, very good, it has the best piroshki I have ever tasted, and that includes the piroshki in Russia! Everyone thinks it's so strange that the best piroshki are in San Francisco, but really. Try them. Their sweets are delicious too, especially the jam- and cream-filled doughnuts. I really love this place, I regularly come from Oakland just to eat there!

traditional Russian fare

All the Russians know about this place, I'm told it's the best Russian bakery in the city and I believe it. It's good AND cheap. The buttercream filled donuts are what donuts should be, not too sweet with a dense yeasty dough. Those of you who are European and miss poppyseed buns can get good ones here. The Potato is wonderful, it's a rum ball.

  • Pros: food, price
  • Cons: no seating
