In Short – Founded in 1901 in Chicago by Charles R. Walgreen Sr., this neighborhood pharmacy has grown to be one of the nation's largest drugstore chains. Each store carries 25,000 different items--from cleaning products to electronics and greeting cards. Store features include a computerized system connecting pharmacies nationwide via satellite, grocery-store food aisles, one-hour photofinishing and an automated phone system for prescription refills and pre-arranged pickup times. Other services include in-store flu shots and childhood immunizations.

Walgreens on Every Corner

by Casi C , Citysearch Contributor at Citysearch

When I moved to San Francisco I noticed two things:

1. Sunday = Funday

2. A Walgreens can be found within walking distance of every home in San Francisco

So, like I said in #2, I have a Walgreens right down the street from my house in Outer Richmond. I go here mostly for late night munchy foods and toilet paper when I just can't get myself to walk down the hill to Safeway (and then back up that dreaded hill!) Most things are over priced, but the convenience factor plays a big roll for my consistent trips here. I have made friends with Kent, one of the check-out guys. He usually sees me in my PJ's buying a bag full of chips and candy! They don't sell wine or beer at this Walgreens, which is a blessing in disguise.

Tip: Watch for the guy with the OBVIOUS bronze colored wig who works there!

  • Pros: Convenient
  • Cons: Pricey
