i had the craziest experience here last week. During the chaos of the holidays I found myself needing a last minute color and cut touch up. The holidays make you do crazy things!! Denise fit me in no questions asked. I love her. My color was great, of course, my cut, exactly the way i wanted it - as always. Right next to Denise is Oliver's chair, and towards the end of all my work this cute foreign woman came into the salon with a blah bob, they quietly chatted about what she was looking for and he then cut her this cool Posh/Katie Holmes bob and the woman just lit up in the mirror. She started telling everyone about how she had just moved here and had been to a bunch of places in the city and this was the first time she actually got a haircut with style. I saw why people get into this business, she walked out a new woman. As the salon was still crazy, this young girl walked in - in tears, she had been mauled at one Union Square Salon... to be unnamed.... and she especially hated her bangs. Not sure who told her they were bangs, even I knew that, foils in hair and all! Oliver and Denise took care of her in minutes, and she left with the hair cut she should have gotten in the first place. I have been all over the city but always come back here, because nobody does it like them - now with Denise I am never leaving! GO GO GO!
Pros: great cuts, customer service, music, Bumble & Bumble!
Cons: parking!!! oh sacramento street...

You can't base a review on just one visit to a hair salon. It takes at least one cut for the stylist to start to get to know your hair, and everyone's hair is different. I've been going to Oliver to get my haircut for 13 years now. Three years ago I moved out of state and I STILL go to Oliver any time I'm in town (about 4 times a year). When I lived in the area, my monthly drive to the salon was about 45 minutes each way---all worth it! His skill and experience put him in the upper echelon of hair stylists. When I've had to get a cut anywhere else I notice a vast difference in expertise---Oliver has much better techniques, his cuts are far more precise, and he is quite creative. The atmosphere in the shop is easy going, yet has a quiet elegance. The people are friendly and most seem to enjoy working here. When you read the various write-ups on the walls of the changing rooms you find out that Oliver has coiffed the hair of rock stars, local celebs, and even Barbara-Bush... but he doesn't ever mention that stuff in conversation. He doesn't have a big ego, he's just a nice, down-to-earth guy. Oliver listens to you when you're explaining what style you'd like and is a true skilled master of his craft.
Pros: Open Monday, expert styling, friendly, neat shopping neighborhood
Cons: Parking can be a little difficult, but really pretty good for the City --- morning appts are easiest for parking
