Not your average bookstore.
One of my favorite things about Green Apple is their extensive Staff Favorite sections. I've been following their recommendations and they haven't steered me wrong yet! They have excellent prices that rival the big chains & their late night hours are super convenient.

This fabulous, book-strewn Inner Richmond oasis has been a reader's refuge for more than 30 years..
This homey San Francisco classic features new and used books, and a staff that knows them like lifelong librarians. Everything from new paperback releases to rare out-of-print volumes and signed copies of first editions sag the shelves of this three story reader's paradise, in addition to volumes of ephemeral and essential knowledge in every category imaginable, from cookbooks to graphic novels, travel guides to children's lit. Next door, the store's extension features a wide selection of CDs (also both used and new) and vinyl recordings (mostly used). Don't be surprised if an entire afternoon passes while you're inside--the shop is a veritable Bermuda Triangle for book-lovers.

it's easy to be incredulous when everyone in the world seems to love this bookstore, but try as i may it's hard to find many flaws with it.
the staff are awesome, knowledgable without being too sugary nice or apathetic like @ borders. when they don't know something, they tell you so. they're usually able to go out of their way to help you out.
the selection is excellent. a few books may be priced a buck or two higher than other used stores in the city, but the selection and atmosphere make up for it. the store is also very intuitively laid out. one or two run throughs and you know the entire place up and down.
their buyback policy is clear, and the credit/cash they give is extremely reasonable.
finally, their used fiction section is amazingly good, and fairly priced.
enjoy!

Endless Stacks.
The Winchester Mystery House of bookstores...it's easy to just keep wandering up, down and around this endless warren of rooms lined floor-to-ceiling with books. Maybe not the best place to come looking for one specific book, but the best place for browsing. Serendipity rules here--you never know when something you've always wanted to read will turn up. Great vintage cookbooks section, too. Also good for selling books.
