it was okay. the place is nice and romantic but the SERVICE IS HORRIBLE when it's a full house ... the waiter came to our table every 40 - 50 mins?? we were thirsty and no one came to pour water also we need to ask for our food 2 times for it to come it took about 1 hr!! ... also the customers were half OLD PEOPLE so they didnt want us to make noise?? come on its the holiday seasons we were having a little gathering opening presents if they want it so PEACE AND QUIET go home and eat your DINNER!!! its a public place!
I think I've entered a time warp - no it's a nightmare.... The reviews outside looked good, and the online recommendations did too. Then you enter, this dark (don't they want you to see the food), smelly room. Walls yellowed from tobacco, or bad 1970's furry wallpaper, terrible reproduction art and tacky pink tablecloths. It was also steaming hot and hard to breath. But I still had hope for some traditional French food. Traditionally: I guess, yes if by that you liked food in the 1980's. French: well there was a lot of garlic in it. I reread the reviews, 1988 to 1990 they spanned, sounds about right to me. The salad is lettuce leaves, 1 cherry tomato and some nasty dressing. The onion soup was good until I discovered large chunks of wood in it left over from the herbs (guess they haven't heard of a herb bag). The special was suppose to be Trout fillet sauted in garlic and butter. But it came covered in herbs and red wine (waiter said it was white, but I would doubt he'd know the difference). Totally destroyed any flavor the trout might have had. The 1 waiter for the whole place, was full of himself and very hard to get any information out of. Overall a terrible, terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Shame really as the chef may actually be pretty good, but he's stuck in the same time warp the furnishings are.
What a find!. Being French, I was quite sceptical when my friend recommended this far flung richmond restaurant. Indeed, from the outside the restaurant goes barely noticeable among a plentitude of reputable korean joints. Be aware, this is not haute cuisine, instead all entrees comme as a set formula including soup, salad, entree, ice cream and coffee. I ordered the rack of lamb medium rare which suprisingly did come out medium rare instead of the usual medium you might get in places where they might not trust your judgement. Quite honestly, this was the BEST rack of lamb I had in the city. The service was impecable and to top it all before leaving, I was cordially thanked by the French speaking Cambodian chef. If you are one of the numerous French expatriate and are looking for a proustian reminder of home cooking this is the place.
Great food at great prices!.
The attentive staff filled our glasses often, and didn't rushus through the courses. A prix fixe menu (12.95-20.95 depending on entree) includes soup, salad, entree w/sides, coffee, and ice cream. The house red wine is $14 for a carafe, and very tasty. I chose the lamb chops (based on the recommendation of our waiter) which was delicious, and came with haricots verts, gratin potatoes, and mashed sweet potatoes. The soup of the day was a delicious split pea. My date had the French onion soup, which was also very good.
One table over was a large group of 14, all speaking French - a good sign! The food is very traditional French, not fussy or overly fancy, like some of the other French restaurants in the city. However, the plate presentation was beautiful when our entrees arrived! The atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious. We will definitely be back!
Definitely worth trying. My wife and I wanted to go to Clementine's one evening, but couldn't make a reservation last minute. We wound up going to La Bergerie instead, and we've been there twice since. It's such a consistently good (and friendly!) place that we've kind of forgotten about Clementine. I've tried the filet mignon, the chicken cordon bleu, and a fish dish (can't remember). All were excellent, as is the escargot and the french onion soup. The prices are very reasonable as well, and the dessert is excellent. You really ought to try it out -- I'd go tonight if they were open on Mondays.
