best sushi in SF!. I've been to this restaurant a hundred times and this is one of my favorite places. The variety of sushi (and other food) is great, you will find the pretty rare types of sushi there. And you will get more fish less rice on your sushi! Unlike some other japanese restaurants they do not close 3 to 5 pm, although they now have a new schedule on monday. The place is not cheap but it is worth the money!
Fairly expensive, but worth it.. This is my favorite sushi place in the neighborhood. The maki are great. But the true test for me is sashimi, and Nagano has never disappointed me there. The quality of the hamachi, maguro and sake sashimi is always excellent. The chefs are friendly, and the waitresses are great. Even when you do takeout and she's not getting a tip, she's friendly and open.

I?ve been coming to Nagano for about 7 years and, despite trying other places in the Bay Area and elsewhere, still consider it to be the best sushi restaurant around. I?ve scaled back, but used to go about once a week. I sit at the sushi bar, chat with the chiefs and other customers, and just all around have a good time.
Nagano consistently delivered good food and an enjoyable experience. The owner personally picks out the fish every morning at a local fish distributor (he won?t tell me where) and it is the freshest I?ve had. A lot of the items are done very traditionally and by hand, like the fact that they make a fresh monk fish liver pate and a great unagi sauce. A good sake list, too. I?m a big fan, and will keep coming back.
VERY VERY BAD! STAY AWAY!. After recently learning that my girlfriend was decidedly unenthusiastic about sushi, I decided to take her out for some and see if I couldn?t change her mind. There are a ton of sushi options in the Richmond district, but I vaguely recalled going to Nagano with friends at some point in the past and enjoying it, so I thought I?d give it another try. Big mistake! Either I was remembering incorrectly or this place has gone on a serious downhill slide sometime in the past year or so. Both the food and service were the worst I have had the misfortune to endure anytime in recent memory. The fish was so far from fresh I started to half seriously wonder if this restaurant supplies itself from the dumpsters of other neighborhood sushi joints. Words I would use to describe the sashimi: Chewy, fishy, slimy, hard and suspect. The rolls were sloppily made, falling apart before I even touched them with my chopsticks. The only thing worse than the food was the service. They brought out my girlfriend?s food a full 15 minutes before mine arrived. After I ordered my meal I decided that I wanted a soda, but not only did no one ever come by at any point during our meal to see if we wanted anything else or ask how we were doing, when I tried to flag a server down I had trouble getting them to even make eye contact with me. Same deal when it was time for the check. And no, before you ask, the place did not seem to be particularly busy. All in all, a horrible dining experience. Needless to say, it did not convince my girlfriend that sushi is the treat I (usually) consider it to be. At $50.00 for two people, the crappy food and service was not even made up for by low prices. With so many sushi choices in this part of town, only a fool or a masochist would eat here.
Good Sushi. Went for dinner the other night. Very good sushi, very fresh. They have a great assortment of rolls, and they even made me a special roll.
Food's gone downhill. Haven't been back here in a couple of years, but popped in for a late lunch at 2pm one Saturday. It was deserted, only 2 of us. The service was slow, incredibly, since all we ordered was tempura udon and chicken teriyaki donburi & tea. The sushi used to be very good, but when I looked over at the sushi bar, only the maguro looked good to me, the hamachi was dry looking. I didn't like my tempura, greasy and oily. The batter was crunchy but too thick. My udon must've sat on the counter after it had been cooked for a while, the noodles were too soft, overcooked. Slivers of cabbage, onion & mushroom dotted the broth which tasted like Swanson's. I was disappointed. Looking across the table, the chicken ldonburi ooked like it had been grilled and just heavily covered in sauce. Made me wish we had waited for a table a couple of restaurants down the street for the BBQ instead. Even 'tho I gave Nagano a good rating in the past, it just reflects how hard it is for restaurants to maintain a certain level of consistency and quality in their food and you have to accept reviewers' notes as a refection of the moment, not of the future or the past.

I've going to Nagano on a regular basis and it's always been excellent, always fresh and they have a great selection of rolls! I really recommend the ankimo (monkfish liver)... it's the best I've had in SF and the portion is ample and quite inexpensive considering...
The waitresses are not rude but they're not too friendly either so if you don't go with too many people I recommend sitting at the sushi bar, the chefs are nice and cool!
You might have to wait for your food a little longer when they're busy but it's worth it!
FRESHEST SUSHI IN THE CITY!. I have been going to Nagano for about 4 years now. The sushi has always been fresh. Nagano has been consistant with the quality of their sushi, fish is extremely fresh. They have plenty of rolls to choose from. I would recommend the sushi over the cooked food here. The prices are not too expensive for the quality and quantity of SUSHI. The sushi is really fresh, but even better, they are NOT skimpy on the fish. The rolls dont have too much rice for a filler(likes other places). The hand rolls are good if you like more fish; I had the Unagi (eel) hand roll and it had barely any rice with 3 thick pieces of unagi and 2 big slices of avocado. For their rolls that cost $10-12, the rolls are a pretty good size compared to other places I have tried. I highly recommend this place!
Good sushi, very good prices. I concur with the previous reviewer, I was pleasantly surprised by the sushi experience at Nagano. Fresh, promptly served, good sushi, with a bill at the end that was rather easy on the wallet. The hamachi in particular was quite tasty. The color pictures of various dishes on the walls were also a nice touch and helpful for selecting what to order.
Great sushi at low $$$.... This is an interesting place. It is Korean owned, yet their sushi is authentic and extremely fresh. The sushi chef sometimes gives you a seaweed salad or pickled veggies for free tasting, and I was once lucky enough to get a piece of toro. The waitresses are middle age ladies who can give you an attitude when the place gets busy... you'll just have to take it light-heartedly I guess. And the tempera ice cream here is the best in the city--- no mint leaves, no raspberry syrup and all that crap--- jsut fried green tea ice cream as how it is meant to be.
