Cole Valley's Service-Oriented, Progressive Pharmacy. If Walgreens took a yoga retreat to India and came back all enlightened and holier-than-thou, it would resurface as Pharmaca. This Boulder-based chain, offering prescription services and homeopathic and traditional medications, has had an outpost in Cole Valley since 2002. Here natural remedies like Hyland’s Migraine Relief are shelved right next to their traditional counterparts like Tylenol, so you can weigh the risk and return of each. Staff members are highly knowledgeable: many trained as naturopaths or herbalists. More importantly, they listen to me explain my latest ache or pain with a compassionate, friendly ear, which is medicine in and of itself. Normally I stop in for the same Colgate toothpaste I can get anywhere, but I like having the option to purchase herbal tea, ayurvedic candles, or a Yoga Journal from the magazine rack. And if I want some medicinal mushrooms, heck, I can get those too! Then there’s Linda Jennings, the hippieish, grandmotherly reflexologist who works her magic for just $1 a minute. A Korean acupuncturist and chair masseuse also moonlight here, but, if you’re like me, Linda's enough.

Editorial Review. Cole Valley residents can pick up homeopathic remedies, over-the-counter cures and the odd knick knack or two at this local drugstore with a small-town feel.
