The Scene
Beyond the antique furnishings, a massive redwood fireplace with Corinthian columns dominates the front parlor. From the foyer, a three-story staircase (sweeping majestically up to the guest rooms and suites) is illuminated by a 16-foot-wide stained-glass dome that miraculously survived the 1906 earthquake. All the rooms have queen-size or larger beds, 19th-century French antiques, fine linens and silks and private baths. Many feature fireplaces.

The Details
Rooms feature honor bars, full or partial canopied beds and complimentary newspaper delivery. Guests can enjoy wine and cheese every evening in the parlor as well as a breakfast of muffins, scones and tea or coffee in their rooms or in the formal dining room. The staff can arrange limousine service to the Opera House or Davies Symphony Hall, both at the Civic Center just six blocks away.

My wife read about this place, and wanted to spend a night here. We did, and that's when I learned it's not your average hotel. There are about a dozen rooms, and each one is furnished differently. The best way I can describe it is period furnishings. You don't stay here for a room, you stay here for the experience. She liked it; me, not so much. You have to learn about it before you go there. You'll either love it or dislike it.

It is my hobby to spend nites in B&B's simply because I am an architecture appreciator. Although S.F. provides many qualtiy B&B's, this one is exceptional. I was accomodated by a very pleasant woman who, on a weekday, provided my date and I with a suite for just barely over the price of a regular room. WOW!!! I cannot stop thinking about being a real princess for not one, because we couldn't get ourselves to leave, but two nites. I am talking about exquisite Victorian era architecture in a huge bedroom donned with a four poster bed, those half circle like windows, and a fireplace to boot. I long for the day I will return to my princess nest in Alamo Square. The staff is amazingly friendly and smart.
