This bar-bones Lower Haight beer-and-wine pub underwent a late '08 renovation--five cozy booths and six more flatscreens put in, no more darts--to become a bonafied sports bar.. Lower Haight derelicts and soccer houligans have been coming to this pub for years--it's been known to open at 6am for games and has a 24 hour "soccer hotline" running to check schedules--but after a late '08 renovation it might get a more regular if still sport-oriented crowd. Where a few rickety tables once tottered towards the back of this cavernous bar, five huge, round six-man booths have been put in underneath at least six new HD flatscreens (for total of ten), meaning every seat in the house has a perfect sightline for watching games. The darts are gone, and there's still pool, and now--for better or worse--a DJ booth. MDITF is still beer-and-wine-only, although you'd be hard pressed to find someone tippling a Pinot here, with about 20 mostly European brews on tap, and a freindly Irish bartender to pour them.
Strange Place. Not being a soccer fan, I shouldn't have been in there. Lots of drinkers rambling about Ireland, but other than that, a decent place.
Fun time..
Good selection of beers. Large place with lots of room... never seen it too packed (not sure if that is good or bad). Great place to watch soccer matches.
Only place that I have found in the US that serves London Pride on tap.
Not good for for football :(. This bar has quite a lot of televisions but what good is it if they are only showing one show? This place may be great for soccer, but it sucks for NFL and for rugby.
Then don't go on a game night.... Mad Dog is one of my favorite spots in the lower Haight, cheifly because they have a lot of space so even when they're pretty busy you have some elbow room. And I've always found the staff to be friendly and fun. Advice for those disgruntled reviewers- go late, and don't go on a game night. :)
Avoid The Bores. If staring at a tape delayed soccer match with a bunch of moody, opinionated Brits in a place that resembles (and smells) like the remains of an old keg of Guiness then this is the place for you!!!
England-Brasil disaster. World Cup, England-Brasil, night of nights for expats. "Their" pub charges $10, starting 9:30. Bad enough, but it gets worse: at 9 p.m., they close the doors (for lack of space, allegedly), people queue up round the block, at 9:30 sharp miraculously more space is found, the doors re-open. Everybody is charged $10, even if they were at the door at 9. Sorry, chaps, but that's not cricket. Of course you have to make money, but this is just a cheap way of trading on the Brit thing and ripping off your most loyal supporters. Martin Mack (Irish pub on Haight) opened up for the Germany-South Korea game, charged nothing and served complementary coffee. The Irish won that one by miles!
For All Soccer Fans.
this is the place to be if you are a soccer fan & cannot find your games on regular American cable.
the English bkfst is great in the mornings with Premiership games. The atmosphere is great. Whoever said this place has only 2 tvs, they have 4 televisions AND a large projection screen, so they obviously did not keep their eyes open
9. You American's will NEVER EVER understand soccer. If you rather support a team that has moved from Kansas, to Balt to Oakl. within the last couple of years, and enjoy giving your frat buddies high 5s while sipping on your Miller Light then please go to a place with larger TV screens. Mad Dog is a PUB. Soccer is what we are watching. A sport you will never understand. Even if the tv's were larger than 72'.
