What People Are Saying About Kate's Kitchen

The Scene – Kate's decor is classic Lower Haight funk, with psychedelic Mayan-inspired paintings and a retro WPA-style mural celebrating the industries of the lower 48 states. Gingham tablecloths and kitchen chairs only further the welcoming atmosphere, drawing throngs of diners seeking to satisfy their comfort-food jones. – – The Food – Classic American fare is served up with mom-worthy style. Blanched Flarney Garney, conveniently explained on the menu as a cheese and egg sandwich, is quite a tasty mix, though asking for your eggs poached can be messy. Hush puppies…

Kate's is Great!
by lp99 at Citysearch
While making my first visit to SF, I took a suggestion from the SF Timeout guide. I took a detour from Golden Gate Park for a late breakfast -12noon on a Wed. - To Kate's Kitchen. I am glad i did! The hash was great and the coffee delicious! I had such a pleasant experience and a great meal that day, I returned on my last day for morning pancakes!
- Pros: Great food for the price!
Long Wait for Watery Eggs
by MNKH at Citysearch
After 40 minutes in the rain, we were expecting a stellar breakfast. To our disappointment, the eggs were watery, the "Lauren Special" was bland and dry and the coffee was bitter. The homefries were yummy, but nothing to make up for the eggs that ended up untouched on my plate. Maybe just an off day for the chef, but certainly not worth the wait.
Even This Big Eater Couldn't Finish His Plate
by huhnchen at Citysearch
I had brunch at Kate's Kitchen on Saturday around noon and my party of 4 was seated within 15 minutes of arriving. I ordered the French Toast "Orgie" [$8, I had to mispell "Orgie" because Citysearch won't let me spell the real thing] with a side order of Hush Puppies. There were four or so slices of thick bread with orange spice as a foundation. On the bread was a mix of honey, granola, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, bananas, and watermelon. There would have been yogurt added to the mix, but I asked for it to be served on the side due to my lactose intolerance [probably more than you wanted to know]. The pile of french toast and deliciousness was so big that I could only finish half of it. The hush puppies were equally delicious since they were served with butter whipped with honey.
Why's The Server/Manager With The Dreads So Angry?
by hungrysf at Citysearch
If you've been to Kate's you definitely know what I'm talking about. The black (just a descriptive...settle down) dude (server...possible owner) with dreads has a permanent mean mug, bad aura and needs to take a "Service 101 Class." He's so bad at "serving" that it's almost comic. The sad thing is it costs the restaurant valued customers...god knows how may others feel the same way and will never go back. He's not the only one...bad service at Kate's is an epidemic. The food is VERY average (if they didn't have the word "O-R-G-Y" on their menu, they'd be out of business). Combine that with the horrible service and you have a recipe for failure. Save your $$$ and eat elsewhere, where they know what good food is, you're "served" and actually valued as a customer.
- Pros: You're In The Haight
- Cons: Horrible (Comic) Service, Negative Vibe, Screaming Cook and The Dreadlock Server!
It was excellent, but is not any longer.

I've been going to Kate's Kitchen for nearly 4 years (sometimes several times a month) and over this period it was excellent- until last week. I hadn't been for a couple of months so I ordered my favorite. Unfortunatly, it was poorly prepared and the quality of the food was far below what I'd come to excepct from this resturant. Figuring it was a just a bad day for them, I went back again this week and again ordered my favorite only to be disappointed by the quality of the food again. And although the service has historically been brash (and, somehow, simultaneously kind), this week it was rude and unacceptable (for example: (1) the server dropped half the toast off the plate and onto the grungy plastic table cover and then promptly placed it back onto the plate in front of us- icky... but no great loss as the unfallen toast was stale; (2) our food sat fully prepared in the kitchen for a least 10 min before being brought to the table (I saw it on the counterwhile using the toilet)).
So while this was my favorite breakfast spot in the city, I can no longer recommend it to my friends or patronize it myself. I suppose now it's time to perform a CitySearch to locate my new favorite breakfast spot!
