The Scene
This well-maintained maroon Victorian with flowering window boxes dates from 1875. Before its current incarnation as a peaceful bed and breakfast, it was a saloon, a bordello, and a speakeasy. The small 14-room hotel borders glorious Victorian homes on one side and unattractive modern office blocks on the other. Situated on the corner of two very busy roads and directly across the street from a fire station, the location is somewhat noisy. The property is easy to find but not within walking distance of most tourist destinations.
The Details
All rooms have a similar Victorian theme with a few mismatched antiques. Some accommodations feature four-poster canopy beds while others are outfitted with small, brass bed frames. Some also have a shared bath, so be sure to clarify your needs when reserving a room. The staff is somewhat abrasive but helpful and lays out a nice breakfast buffet.

We stayed here because they have a UCSF shuttle stop nearby, which was most convenient for us. The rates were reasonable and it is located a few blocks away from shops and restaurants. Each room is decorated with authentic period pieces, which was really unique.
