Editorial Review for Chateau Tivoli Bed & Breakfast Inn – by Gayot.com
The Scene
The experience begins the moment you see the chateau. Its colorful turrets brighten the skyline, and its massive corner setting dominates its historic Alamo Square neighborhood. The hotel's grand 1800s architecture is complemented by incomparable interior touches--among the furnishings, you'll find pieces from the estates of Charles De Gaulle, J. Paul Getty and the Vanderbilts. This is a charming alternative to the typical downtown San Francisco stay.
The Details
Individually designed rooms are decorated with designer wallpaper, American Renaissance furnishings and four-poster beds. Each is been named after a luminary, such as the Isadora Duncan room with its magnificent ceiling. The Jack London room has a cozy tower sitting area. Two-bedroom suites are also available, although fabulous standard rooms are more than satisfying. Wine and cheese are served in the evenings; champagne makes weekend brunch a celebration. The hotel enjoys a quiet residential location near Golden Gate Park.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to San Francisco for our birthdays. Despite the positive reviews that I read about this B&B, we found it to be quite impersonal. The building is beautiful but the service was non-existent. The breakfast was okay and not very interesting. I have stayed in other B&B where there seemed to be a sense of ownership by the staff but I did not sense it here. The location is very nice. The bathroom was nothing to speak of in our Aimee Crocker room and there was not much heat in that side of the building. For the price, there was nothing luxerious about this place and I would not think of going back there. CWB/ABQ,NM
Pros: beautiful house
Cons: needs more light, more heating in room, would like a little service, impersonal

We recently spent our anniversary at this beautiful Victorian Painted Lady B&B. We have stayed here before a few years ago, and enjoyed it very much. We stayed in the Luisa Tetrazzina l Room ast time, but it was not available , so we opted for the Aimee Crocker room instead. We found this room to be a bit small. But beautiful in decor. Except for the Home Depot type faucet/shower and toilet area. I really expected them to match the era. I was dissapointed with the bathroom choices. This room was also located above the kitchen, so the dishes began clanking quite early. It was not as quiet on this end of the house, so we will be staying on the other side of the house (if we return). The breakfasts were outstanding and the innkeepers were very attentive. When you pay over $500 for 2 nights you expect these kind of details. Overall we really like this place and feel comfortable, just make sure you get the right room. The street seemed to have a lot of parking issues and sirens and police activity, I am not sure if the neighborhood has gone downhill. But we survived. And love this house and its beauty!! The house needs some paint on the outside, maybe that will draw more visitors.
