Smaller than an actual cable car, this historic local diner satisfies old-fashioned burger, shake and fry cravings..
In Short
Located near the high-traffic intersection of Geary and Masonic (and, ironically, near Kaiser Permanente hospital), this tiny, street-side, neighborhood diner has been in the business of burgers, BLTs and fish and chips since 1972. There are some heart-healthy plates--grilled chicken, turkey and veggie burgers--but most people come here for fast, old-fashioned, greasy burgers with a side of chili-cheese fries or, better yet, a deep-fried burrito. Breakfast sandwiches and hash browns feed the early crowds; drive up for take-out.

Yummy artery clogging malts.
After you've visited the lab for your cholesterol test, this is the place to confirm that you have not been eating healthy. The place has been in the same spot for years and consistently serve the best milkshakes/malts around. The shakes at In N Out burger joints are awful, but this is one of my favorite places for shakes besides the coffee ones at Mel's Diner. It's thick and full of malt flavor. I've always favored their fish square burgers over McDonald's handsdown. A greasy fried fish patty over a thick bun with lettuce, sauce and relish. The onion rings are inconsistent. Usually thick and crispy, a recent trip was disappointing because the rings tasted processed, like at Burger King. The fries are crinkly cut, but frozen type, so In N Out wins for authentic fries. The 1/4 lb burger or hot dog specials are the best bargain as they come with fries or onion rings and a shake for under $9. They recently scored a perfect 100 from the food inspectors in 12/07! There's counter space for a handful of diners and 2 tables inside and 2 outside.

Great place for burgers!.
The place to go, especially for USF students, staff, and alumni. If you eat in, limited seating with a couple of tables outside, but nice place to sit, eat, and do some people watching. Small parking lot on site. Good burgers, plenty of crinkle fries, moderate prices. Also on the menu (take out flyer available) milkshakes, chili cheese fries, fish & chips, and breakfast muffin to name a few. The service is great, the staff attentive especially as they call you when your order is ready! Overall, a nice place, ****/4 stars.

Yum.
Tony's Cable Car restaurant is easy to miss if you're driving fast down Geary. However, if you miss the pullout from Geary, proceed through the tunnel and turn around anyway you can and find your way to this great burger joint. Tony's has the greatest non-pretentious burger served in a setting full of red seats, tables, walls to whet your appetite. My younger brother ordered the 1/2 pound burger, and they weren't lying. The patty really was 1/2 pound! They have a lot of options on their menu (including healthy options such as chicken, veggie burgers, as well as American unhealthy options such as milkshakes, fish & chips, and hot dogs with chili) Mmm

Tony's a Neighborhood Stalwart.
Delicious greasy spoon that offers turkey and veggie burger alternatives if you are not in the mood for beef. Delicious Milk shakes and fries that are never too greasy. The coolest staff to ever work a joint like this, they know their customers by name and are always cheerful. Eat here when you just have to have some greasy burgers.

An SF Classic.
If you have ever driven up Geary you must have seen Tony's and wondered if it is any good. Well, I like this place and walk over often to pick up grub. It is a classic greasy spoon providing basic grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, shakes, and hot dogs. The food is good, the people are nice, and it helps remind me why I live in San Francisco
