This is the third time we have been to Maki and we had one of the WORST meals ever. Being the conscientious parent, I ordered a chicken teriyaki entree the minute we sat down so our kids can start eating first. The rest of the adults (3) ordered noodles. Out came the tea and the water. One of the water glasses had LIPSTICK stains on it still!!! After a few minutes, they took the glass away but never came back with a replacement until we had to ask for it. The food came - the noodles and tempura first. 10 minutes later, the chicken teriyaki. About 2/3 through the meal, the waitress came to see if our son wants his food boxed up. He was still eating - we said no. He's 4 and eats at a good pace - probably the pace we should ALL be eating and not gorging down our foods like most Americans. We were there for all of 45 minutes from the minute we sat down to when she finally asked us, "Can we box up your food? We have a 6:30 pm reservation." It was 6:40 pm and my son had his mouth open for another piece of chicken. We left - we were so incensed! First of all, if they had given him his chicken first, he would've been done with his meal. Secondly, I have NEVER been shooed away from a table while someone was STILL EATING!!! I understand they had a reservation but if they didn't think we'd finish (5 people - no appetizers, no dessert) in 45 minutes (including cooking time and stuff), then they should not have seated us or should've put a "reserved" sign on a table. I can fully understand if we were all done and were just shooting the breeze, drinking tea and stuff. But my son was STILL EATING HIS DINNER! The food was good but not THAT good. But for a $85 meal (3 bowls of noodles, 1 chicken teriyaki, 1 tempura, no alcohol - not allowed outside), I expected something much better. If not spectacular, at the minimum, decent and courteous service. We can get food that quality elsewhere in J-town. What we wanted was great service. We will NEVER go there again.

If you've spent enough time in Japan, you will understand the food here. If your experience of Japanese food is sushi restaurants in New York City, then it will seem very odd. The food here is very authentic, very fresh, but not like food in other Japanese restaurants in the US. Spend some time in Hokkaido and this will seem wonderful to you, but it's not an American taste. I don't understand the comments about the service, maybe people weren't respectful enough. I have showed up with and without reservations and never had a problem, but I do bow slightly and speak softly. After at least fifteen trips here, I have never had a bad experience with service and food. However, I have traveled quite a bit in Japan and understand the culture.

We chose this place because of the Zagat rating (26 for food) and the "best of citysearch" sign they posted on the window. We didn't know anything about "hidden gem" or "long wait" etc. We were just travelling in SF from New York City. Nevertheless, this is definitely a disappointment. And the fact that their sushi bar wasn't even setup should give it away. We had the "Found Only here" noddles and sushi. Both are average if not below. My gf thought the tuna was not refresh, I thought it was just ok but the rice on the sushi was too much and too sweet. The noodles? it was just plain, nothing special. If you know anything about Japanese food, you would not repeat this place. We are both Sushi lovers and can name more than a dozen of Japanese restaurants in NYC that's better than this. One reviewer mentioned about them creating the illusion of long wait with "reservations" That is certain ly what we observed and we did not read the reviews before hand. One other review recommended this place mentioned about the owners are there and all female, I don't see how being all female is relevant but they are all Chinese, not Japanese. Overrated, Over priced, Average food. I don't know what Zagat was thinking rating this place 26 in food.
