Editorial Review for Frankie's Bohemian Cafe – by Citysearch Editors

In Short
This Czech-American corner cafe is a hugely popular hangout for local 30-somethings. With its friendly vibe and eclectic decor--blood-red walls and a blue star-studded ceiling--it's no wonder it's always packed. The eclectic menu features Americanized offerings such as pasta, burgers and salads. But the most popular dish is brambory, a classic Czech dish made with shredded potato and zucchini and then formed into a crisp, 10-inch pancake.

So I am tired of the bad food in this part of the City. I work in the neighborhood and eat lunch here a lot. I have passed by Frankie's a few times because it looks like a bar and as much as I want to go in and have few, I still have to work. The food was EXCELLENT! I had the carnitas dinner and my friend had a hamburger and fries. The waiter was a complete a**, he took our drink order and after he had finished counting out his tips and chewing the fat with his buddy at the bar I asked him for our drinks, his reply "I'm working on it!" when he clearly was not , and did not want to be bothered. When our food came he plunked the plates down without a word and never came back to see if everything was satisfactory. I tip for almost any service, slow, mistakes, poor food, etc. But this guy acted like he didn't want us there, maybe we weren't the "right kind" of people for Frankie's, it's too bad too because, as I said, the food was rocking. I just can't see myself doing the soup n@zi thing from Seinfeld and putting up with some punk kid with an attitude just to get at the food. Just for balance, I did go in one time to ask if they had an ATM and the bartender there (not the same guy) was very cool...

Pros: Food

Cons: Service

My first introduction to Frankie's Bohemian was 6 years ago on a random date. We were looking for a nice place in Pacific Heights close to home for both of us. A random rumor of garlic peaked our interest; and it was highly recommended by a friend of his, so we decided to give it a try. Upon entry, I thought what kind of place is this? Red walls, blue ceiling? I had some concerns to day the least. We were immediately seated and had two ice cold beers rushed over to our table by the sweetest waitress in the city, relieving some tension I may have had about the paint job. I looked skeptically at the menu, and was pleasantly surprised. Being a picky eater I wondered what I would choose at a restaurant with the word "bohemian" in the title. The ambiance of the room and people, mixed with the loud music, and the stir of other conversations was intoxicating; as well as the smells coming from the kitchen, and the enormous beer. What seemed like moments later our food arrived. Wow, I had the Gilroy burger and a side of garlic fries, and a huge nice cold beer, my date had the same as to not ruin the end of the night kiss... But I must say that all in all it was amazing food and I had to take the majority of the very large portion home. Now six years later I ask my boyfriend what's for dinner? He gives his typical response, "burgers?" I suggest Frankies Bohemian and forward him on the menu. As remembered the friendly staff was prompt and polite. The food amazing! And the overall experience was one worth remembering 6 years later and I will be back. Thanks for the great food and fun! I highly recommend Frankies Bohemian Café for a fun, casual, date. Avoid the garlic if it is your first date, it is a bit strong; but if not, I highly recommend the Gilroy and the garlic fries.

Pros: The staff and the food!

Cons: A little intimidating upon entrance
