Wow-a glorious theatre. Went to the Frameline's film festival the other night to view Baby Jane? The theatre was packed with an enthusiatic audience. The enviornment is wonderful, the decor magnificent. A thrill to watch a film there. It is great that the theatre was restored to it's true intent. Love seeing films in old theatres. The cinaplex can not hold a candle to the old beauties.

Better than Ever!!!!. I like history and I love the Castro! It does not matter what we see at this amazing theater...it is the experience that we remember. Take an evening and see it for yourself....you will fall in love with it too!

Adventurous programming, live organ music and a dash of movie magic.. In Short
Though the theater has been renovated since its heyday in the '20s and '30s, the original art-deco design of the interior is still intact. Two red-carpeted staircases flanking the lobby lead to a spacious balcony, and the theater itself boasts elaborate murals combining Roman, Asian and Arabic art motifs. The small balcony terraces to the side of the screen and the chandelier hanging from the ceiling's center give the theater a regal look.

not what it used to be. Hope for a management change, not what it used to be. Still a beautiful theater with lots of history. Worth a look.

Awesome for movie buffs:) Nice piece of history, worth the stop!. The theater is BEAUTIFUL, and build in the silent era (20's). Have old projector in lobby, and seats are not stadium style (just a slight incline), but you can see fine (similar setup to opera, or broadway play). There are gorgeous old murals on the walls, the old-style curtains to the left and right of the screen, and gold ornamental wall decorations. A must for any movie buff (did I say that already?:)). Call ahead for movie schedules (they play some great old , sing-along, and "film-festival" type stuff. An organ is played before one of the performance, but was not played before our performance in afternoon.

Fabulous Glamour. Ahh, a movie palace the way they used to be. This glamorous cinema is the best rep house by far in the Bay Area. It's a must for the Gay and Lesbian Film Fest as well as the Jewish Film Fest. Everything looks better on the big screen here!

Bad sound, too cold. I appreciate the caliber of films shown here, and the Peet's coffee at the snack bar. However, I went to see a showing of "McCabe and Mrs. Miller" in January and lost feeling in my toes it was so cold in the theater. Additionally, the sound was so poor that much of the dialogue was unintelligable.

A Grand Ol' Movie Palace. Hard to imagine a better place to see a movie. The mini-organ recital at the beginning of the show; the intelligent repertoire of films; the crowd--all these factors come together for a San Fran-only experience.
