Editorial Review for Notorious for Hair – by Lorraine Sanders

In Short
This funky Castro salon's second-floor, apartment-like space is more bohemian than it is posh, with Hollywood-style lighted mirrors and glittered wall art. Pierced and tattooed stylists will get your head in ship-shape condition, whether that means adding hot pink chunks, twisting up dreads or prepping wigs for drag divas. Patrons often stop in to replenish their stock of hair products, which include MOP and Redken lines.

I just called this salon because I was excited about getting my first haircut and I spoke with someone briefly that told me that he "does not deal with my type of hair" but that I could call back tomorrow to see if Chris does. I felt that to be rude and offensive. He was not polite in the least. I, being a woman of color felt very discriminated against and from your website I thought I had found an open, fun and inviting atmosphere but I guess not. I will never attempt to contact this place again for any services.

Let me preface the experience to give you an idea of my situation: I am a six foot tall blonde, with unruly long hair. My blonde locks reach down to the center of my back, and my biggest problem was the constant abundance of knots and split ends, which would find there way in to my styled straight hair due to a rather blunt cut from a previous hairdresser at another salon as well as the intense heat of my hair straightener. The health and appearance of my hair is extremely important because of my job as a model, meaning it is necessary to keep my hair within the constraints of the industry. My actual experience at Notorious: I went into the salon a few weeks ago wanting a trim and touch up on my layers. I had the honor of having my hair cut by owner Dianne Sommerfeld. Her years of experience and expertise showed as she skillfully layered and trimmed the dead ends of my hair without compromising its length. Upon leaving the salon my hair felt infinitely healthier and I was able to run my hands through my hair, snarl free. She also recommended a heat protective product by Redken, which has already made a vast improvement the health of my hair. Thanks Dianne!! Just yesterday I returned to the salon because I had a desperate want to add a few extra highlights to my naturally highlighted blonde hair. I wanted that end of summer glow to compliment my sun tanned skin, however I have never had any sort of color, highlights, or dye in my hair. Feeling slightly nervous about having my virgin hair highlighted I decided to do it anyways. I had stylist Adrienne do the highlighting on my hair. Her vivacious personality and color expertise made me feel really comfortable with the whole experience. Adrienne's experience with color really showed as she matched the new highlights to the color of my natural highlights flawlessly. The color frames my face perfectly, bringing out my summer tan nicely. Props to Adrienne, thanks!
