love the old school vibe. i have loved this place since i first came to SF 30 years ago. grea music, ok food, and stiff drinks. cant miss for a great time.
great bar I never would have found. I went here on a Monday night since my buddy was performing in his new band with the blue bear music school. I probably never would have ventured over to this place otherwise, but it turned out to be a really great bar. The whole bar is below street level and has that old feel to it. There was a lot of space in the bar which was great too. I'd definitely recommend checking it out sometime, although I haven't been on a weekend night.
Herd mentality must be why so many overlook the many bad points.. The bartenders are inattentive and they serve expensive drinks. The sound is muffled at best. You can't see the stage when it gets at all crowded. The food is expensive and slow to arrive. The herd seems to like it though. If that's you then you might too. Honestly, I don't get it at all. Moooooo.

Intimate Setting. The Du Nord was not pretentious or stuffy when we saw our fave band play there, just crowded. Do NOT order a soda here, it's watered down RC cola, blech. The food was pricey and I had the worst undercooked tortellini in my life, but it's worth it for the friendly staff and the intimate setting for music. The tiny stage allows up-close and personal views, but get your front row spot early. The basement speakeasy atmosphere is genuinely unique, comfy settee and free copies of the onion make it even better. As a podunk from CO, I felt no out-of-place attitude from anyone. Lovely venue for music, just don't eat. Park in the lot down the block, it's worth the money.
Best Live Music in Town. I love the Du Nord. They do the most creative job of booking in town at both the Du Nord and the Swedish Hall. I've seen some great acts that I never would have thought would play at a club their size. They are nice people and I also dig their food. I just wish the stage was higher. I always need to get there early to get up front so I don't have to worry about seeing over the tallish folks.
Nothing but good things to say. Great space, you can onto of the bamds or not. Good booze. Great line-up of entertainment. Well run. Keep up the good work
Victorian-era decor and live entertainment inside Market Street's landmark Swedish-American building..
The Scene
This place has retained its charm since the early 1900s, when it operated as a speakeasy. The brothel-red walls blend with striking fixtures like Victorian-style mirrors, Belle Epoque-era posters and a 40-foot mahogany bar. Hard-core audiophiles spend most of their time on the classroom-sized red-and-black floor in front of the intimate stage. Meanwhile, the chill set hangs in the back lounge, replete with red velvet furniture and a pool table. The place is typically full of scenesters--which scene depends on whether a rock, alternative or electronic act is performing.
The Draw
The venue's attention to early 20th-century decor and cozy stage make this one of the coolest spots to see live music in town. Bartenders are well-schooled at slinging mixed drinks. Tap brews like Fat Tire and Boddington's are reasonably priced ($4-$4.50) and popular with patrons.
Basement Bordello Bliss!!!. This HAS to be the sexiest bar in town! Not only is it dimly lit but it has tones of corners a couple could slink into! Add to that the fact that the staff is made up of veterans- meaning no BS at the door and great drinks every time. In fact the security seems set up to keep the sleaze out and the good times in. This bar is definitely a ten.
Classic in every way.... This place is incredible. A speakeasy in the times of prohibition, classic design coupled with a shady past creates an atmosphere unlike most places in the city...hip and comfortable, hang out to discuss Kafka or drink 'till you fall off the stool...Either is welcome.
