Not as good as it used to be. Bad value. Service was mediocre. I had a chicken entree, and the portion size was shockingly small. Food was underwhelming for the price. New owners have ruined it.
service was the worst i've ever had. the waitress was terrible. i went with a big group and i was not very hungry so i planned to order an appertizer and a dessert. i told the waitress to hold the appetizer and bring it out when everyone got their meals. the meals came and went and no appetizer. the waitress did not check on us so everyone finished eating while i was sitting there with nothing. when she finally came i told her that i didnt want the appetizer anymore because everyone was done and i didnt want to be the only one still eating. a few minutes later she showed up with the appetizer! i told her again that i didnt want it and she took it back and said she would bring a dessert menu for me. well, she did. but she did not say anything when she brought it and kinda just dumped it in the space next to me. then she shows up again with menus for everyone else, which she placed in everyone's hands individually. i never gave her a hard time and i have no idea why she would act like that. i will never go there again and will advise everyone i know not to go there either
Not what I expected... Awesome none the less.
Okay, so the pictures you'll see of this place are deceiving but here's the deal... I took a date here based on the reviews I read and from what I saw on their web-site. Walking in is strange because you'e instantly facing a large circular candle lit bar, sitting on a floor of cracked concrete - yeah, concrete. Coming form the wine country I was suprised to see concrete flooring at a "fine dining" restaurant but we waited to be seated none the less. One thing I noticed is the dance music that eminates from the bar is VERY loud and reaches all parts of the dining area(s) - however, somehow it didn't disrupt the many conversations taking place in the restaurant (mine included) - it seemed to just kind of fit. This place has a strage but great balance of bustle/energy and chic elegance. We were seated in a dining area with a view of the bar, although this particular area was VERY nice and dimly lit by candles - awesome ambiance. Although I has heard complaints of service here, ours was near perfect. A server by the name of "Brian" waitied on us and dispelled any rumor of poor service here. The food was AWESOME although the wine list by the glass left a lot to be desired - way too many imports and only a few California selections. Wines by the bottle selection was much better but as always, way overpriced. That leads me to my only complaint which is that the menu prices were all bumped up about $10.00 per entree and $5 per starter, I would imagine because of "Pride" weekend - didn't like the "bait and switch" with their advertised menu prices on the web-site. Oh well, I suppose it's par for the course. Oh, and the restrooms are trendier then most bars I've been in!
Overall, Mecca falsely repsenets itself online but not to a fault - Awesome food, different but great ambiance and fabulous service - I will return.
Cool Place in the Castro. I had my first romantic date with my fiancee at Mecca almost three years ago. I haven't been back since (but I should have!) It's expensive but very good with a nice, trendy ambiance. I recommend it!
Simply sublime. Had a fantastic evening at Mecca. Everything from the ambiance to the food was outstanding. The staff is very friendly, and went out of their way to take care of our party of 8. Definitely a "scene" place, which added to the excitement of the evening. We were celerating a special occasion, but i can see myself going back for a causal dinner as well. Great restaurant
Shoulda saved my money for something else. Went to Mecca with a group a few weeks ago. The bar scene there is very cool and the drinks were good. We were seated promptly but that was the end of our good service. Our waiter didn't seem comfortable with himself (he seemed new and flustered), and then the manager kept stopping by our table, but it seemed he was more interested in the girls sitting with us than ensuring that our dining experience was positive. The food was decent, althought the portions were small, but for the prices and the service, definitely NOT RECOMMENDED.
thursday happy hour. my girlfriend and i have stopped in a couple times on thursday evenings. this is a great spot for the ladies, particularly if you like a variety of oysters as we do. the swank seating, impressive bar, and friendly people make mecca one of my favorite happy hour spots in the city. tasty wines and cocktails round out the selection. it can get a bit pricey so come prepared.
Bad Service from the Management. I went to Mecca in September of 2005, and used my check card to pay. The charge FINALLY shows up FEB. 2006 on my bank statement. And I am charged not once, but TWICE! I call and leave a message for the manager. He doesn't return the call. Then I call again and he answers this time. He says it's a glitch in the system and it can be corrected. (I can accept that part, things like that happen sometimes.) But it seems weird to me that I would have to CALL THEM, 2 WEEKS AFTER it was charged twice on my account!!!!! Also, the only suggestion he gives me to correct it is to notify my bank. He was just being lazy. He could have taken the extra charge off of my account himself, instead of making the customer do it.
Simply Fabulous Dining Experience!.
I hadn't been to Mecca in quite some time, but decided to try it again with a small group of friends. We were not disappointed! The food was way better than I remembered. We feasted on a variety of dishes recommended by our highly attentive and personable server, including the melt-in-your mouth Foie Gras and the excellent Mecca French fries. The duck was delicious and moist. The fig stuffed pork tenderloin was simply to die for--so tender! The seared Ahi tuna was some of the best I've had in San Francisco.
The servers seemed to go out of their way to make sure we enjoyed the entire meal. The supper club feel offers a unique San Francisco experience with simply excellent food. I'd go back in a heartbeat and have already made another reservation.
Knocked the sock off. I've taken three work associates to Mecca in the last 2 months, and each time my guests were *wowed*. The ambience alone is an experience--where DO they find such large flower arrangements? And then the food starts coming. It's all about the sauces! Just dabs and dribbles, but what amazingly pretty and tasty additions! I never knew duck didn't have to be chewy and stringy. And interestingly enough--they serve the best garlic fries in the world. (All three times we didn't come close to finishing the huge single serving.) When I want my work associates to feel pampered, I take them to Mecca.
