I have been a customer at the Castro Squat and Gobble for several years I went in about 2:30 in the afternoon to order an ice tea; there was no line and it was fairly quiet in terms of other customers. I was asked if I wanted to sit inside or outside and I said outside; the person at the counter (sandy haired younger guy) said I couldn't unless I ordered some food. I said given the fact that it was not crowded and I was a very regular customer couldn't I sit outside and he told me, no, it was the rules on the weekend that you had to order food to get an outside table. I decided to leave and go somewhere I could sit outside but the Cafe Flore was too crowded so I came back and said " I think your rule is ridiculous when there is no one here and I am a long standing customer but I'll buy the tea and sit inside even though I think that is very bad customer service" Another man - who looked like some kind of manager- came up to me and said " If you cant watch your language , you will have to leave" I was surprised and I said " Excuse me, I haven't been inappropriate or rude in any way. I am just giving feedback on something I don't agree with. I think its not good customer service to alienate a good customer over some little rule" The man then said" I don't care if you are a customer, we wont put up with this kind of behavior". I was just aghast because I had not been rude in any way or used any inappropriate language and here he is practically telling me to get out. I thought the man showed a lack of interpersonal or customer service skills and he was just plain rude. I said " well in that case , I would be glad to leave and I will not be a future customer here" and he seemed not to care at all essentially saying" fine, go"

I have eaten here many times. While the food is unremarkable, the location is convenient. On my last visit (during 90+ degree weather, BTW) the checkout clerk asked if we want to outside or in. We requested outside, but said we would take an inside table if no outside table comes available by the time the food comes. Paid for the food and went to wait outside. An angry man in an apron barked at us to wait inside, and wouldn't listen to our explanation of what we had discussed with the checkout guy. We just gave in to keep the peace and went in and sat at a table next to a closed window. When I went to open it, the same surly man yelled "Don't open that window!". Remember, it was a heat wave and extremely hot inside. I had had enough of this man's little military state world and told him so. He went on a tirade making several anti-American slurs. Apparently (and shockingly) this guy is the owner. People who treat customers this poorly do not deserve to have them.
