What Our Expert Scouts Say

Kokkari Estiatorio

This place consistently rocks. Some of the best grilled octopus and lamb in town. Taramosalata and pita is a killer app. If you see the goat stew on the menu, pounce on it! You can thank me later.

High-quality cuisine in a sophisticated, yet cozy, vast space. Pita bread & dips and Grilled Octopus are A+. Opt for Greek yogurt dessert.

Loud, and unflavored food with bones in my fish. It was my wife's birthday choice and when we were seated right next to the bar it was so loud I could not hear my wife and she kept getting bumped by those at the bar.

We requested to be moved and we were shortly...

We ordered the meatballs (Soutzoukakia) and it was okay, nothing too great, it wasn't too tender as one would have hoped. I ordered the halibut steak (Galeos) and it wasn't temder at all, almost burned on the outside, not flavored in the inside, and also I had bones all in it where I had to use my hands to eat with. My wife's dish, I can't recall, but it was tender and a little better...but for a $75 meal, not worth it at all. We ate at this mexican place the following night and it was 1/6th the price and 10 times better.

Overall, for the place, the price, I rate is 2 stars. Also, my friend from work went there and said he had the same expeirnece and if I told him I was going there he would have suggested another place.

Exceptional dining experience. We showed up a bit early and waiting for our table at the bar. We were seated at our exact reservation time which was nice. The entire staff was wonderful, our waitress was great with very good menu and wine suggestions. The building was beautiful and the food was delicious! We ordered several of the appetizers to share and were already stuffed by the time our main courses came but they were all wonderful too. Then our waitress brought us out a compelimentary dessert because she said it was her favorite and we just had to try it. We loved every minute of it and will definitely be back for more!

Great Greek food finished by the best dessert menu in San Francisco. The food is incredible - not much more to say there; you can't go wrong. The service is great not just because it's efficient and friendly, but because they're great at steering you towards combinations that work with both food and drink. Top it off with the best dessert menu I've ever drooled over. Fun atmosphere for a group, especially.

One of the best dining experiences I've had. Kokkari was fantastic. We arrived early, the bartenders, and other customers were friendly. A friend had recommended I try this restaurant, I had no idea it was this nice. My date and I were under dressed, but were treated with complete respect. Our waiter was great, funny, charming and well--perfect.

The food--some of the best I've had, anywhere at any price. The coffee was a work of art. Drinks were outstanding.

I can't imagine a better dining experience.

Thank the gods for this restaurant. Why haven't I been here before, I ask myself as a self proclamed restraunt know-it-all? This swanky and beautiful restaurant is very much worth the price. Walked in with no res. early on a Saturday night and was seated at a table to the side of the bar. Possibly not the best spot but considering that the place was already buzzing and was shortly packed to the brim with everyone from society page divas to young club goers, I was pleased as could be. Service not abriviated either, friendly server took care with wine (a Cretian red and a retsina both worth a try, go on!) suggestions and menu questions. Loved the selection of spreads from the appetizer menu, we had the split pea puree, feta spread and fish row spread on the restaurants pita, each delicious, unique and filling! Also had the stuffed calmari, a treatment I don't even remember from visits to the Med. Moved on the the Rib Eye and the Goat (yes!) Stew, now don't panic, this was one of the best meal, ever. The goat stew had a moussaka like spice over orzo with root veggies ( I want to say celery root and butternut squash roasted to perfection)with flavorful meat as tender as you please. The steak was grilled perfectly and neither the server nor the kitchen flinched at my partners standard order of rare. It was exactly what he wanted. Couldn't possibly eat dessert, but the selections were varied and looked great. With the approx. $90 each this qualified as a very special night out for us, but we were both so satisfied to find a vortex of good food, good service and beautiful ambiance in an often, sorry, over rated upper end restaurant scene, (in my experience it is largely the service which falls short in this arena) that we would go back this weekend! Great choice for groups!

best pita bread and Takashi in town. Their pita bread and assortment of spreads can not be beat! Order it as an appetizer to the many great dishes they have to offer. Just make sure you call ahead and make reservations! The food is good, but I am no so sure about the hour wait.

Great appetizers. I went here with a group of coworkers and we ordered a bunch of appetizers, I was in heaven! I had never been too a Greek restuarant (before this one) that I enjoyed so much! The appetizers consided of many different plates and bowls of a variety of items such as olives, or bread with dips, vegies, and little feta wraps. My entree was so delicious, I cannot remember what it was called but it was the Greek's version of lasagna and it was very tasty! The decor is beautyful... waiters were very kind and pleasant.

good food, good wine, good service. this place is huge! I think it can accomodate about 200 people! result: it's a little noisy! But service was great and prompt. Food and wine were good. It's not cheap, but I think it was well worth it.

not an environmentally friendly neighbor. The restaurant and food may be fine. The smells and pollution from its many emission sources, located on the rooft, are tough on neighbors. The large fireplace, while apparently giving decor inside, is a major source of pollution for neighbors, especially for many in the adjacent high-rise apartments. Why not a non-polluting source (natural gas or electricity), giving the same ambience? This restaurant opened in November 1998, long-after these apartments were constructed and its rooftop with these emmission sources is situated below many of these dwellings.

One of the best. Kokkari is fabulous. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, the food great and although a fancy restuarant, the service is never stuffy.
