Mediocre at Best.... I was lured to Chaya with the promise of a great happy hour that lasts all evening long. What they don’t tell you is that their happy hour menu consists of 3 cheap wines and about 8 “specialty” cocktails which mean they are so packed full of sugar you’re not even sure what kind of alcohol you are drinking. They did, however, have quite a few bar bites that range from sushi rolls to garlic fries, none of which were good enough to recommend this place for after work drinks.

Try to get one of the few window tables up front with the Oakland Bay Bridge view.. San Francisco is loaded with outstanding restaurants. Recently, with our good friends Terye and Jacob Levy, we ate at Chaya Brasserie, located down in the Embarcadero.

This place is great and has one of the most spectacular views in the city. The industrical-chic decor blends well with the Franco-Jaopanese cooking Chaya introduced to the Bay Area in 2000 (and Los Angeles 1984). In Japan, the legendary and original Chaya restaurant has been around for 358 years. Wow.

Try to get one of the few window tables up front with the Oakland Bay Bridge view. The 1989 earthquake helped by collapsing the unsightly freeway out front.



As per usual in this town, we all had a great dining experience. The food, ambiance and service were all up to the high-end San Francisco standards. As a Seattle native, I am almost embarrassed to say that the Salmon entree was as good as I have ever had.

However, Allyn, who is a Sea Bass aficionado, did not care for her fish. She was not even sure that it was Sea Bass. Her decision to return ithe mystery fish was an easy one, as it was dry and overcooked. Our helpful and appologetic waitress was very quick to accommodate.

GREAT happy hour!. I have actually not visited the San Fran Chaya, only Venice.

BUT I called to confirm that they do the same great happy hour at both locations!

It is 5-7:30 During the week and all day on the weekend!

Basically, they ahave a limited menu of some sushi rolls (the usuals- California, etc and a rotating Chef's special), and other items (miso, tuna tartar, etc), plus cocktail specials!

The food is good and such a bargain!

Two of us ate and had really yummy lychee fruit martini and a very generous glass of sake for like $20 each!

Horrible place-Horrendous service. My first day of the week was not one of the most polarizing experiences I've ever had; what a waste! incompetent service + inedible food = to avoid at all cost! Great bartenders and a truly sweet host though.

Best bread pudding!!!. Chaya is conveniently located within walking distance of the Embarcadero BART station and offers a view of the Bay Bridge. My companions and I ordered the pork wrapped in bacon, rib eye, and wild mushroom risotto. All of which were flavorful and prepared to order. I highly recommend saving room for dessert. It was hard to pick which desserts to order given how tempting they all were, but we decided upon the molten chocolate cake, tres leches cake, and the croissant bread pudding. Although all of our choices were delicious, the bread pudding was the best bread pudding I have ever eaten. It was creamy, rich, and baked to perfection.

incredible Foie Gras !!!. The highlights of our dining experience were the appetizers and service. The wait staff was very knowledgable and attentive. The meal was perfectly timed. After our appetizers, the Foie Gras - one of the best I've ever had and the tuna roll sushi, we couldn't imagine how that could be outdone. It wasn't. The main courses of the lamb and pork were both dull and uneventful..however, overall, not bad - just didn't live up to the start of the evening. I'd recommend - but think about a dinner of appetizers...if they are all that good, I'd go back again and try it that way!

Amazing cuisine!. I ate here 3 years ago and still dream about it. Amazingly unique combinations of dishes, great service, and excellent wine list. Can't wait to go back!

French, AND Japanese anyone?. Wow! A bit worry at first. I mean, French and Japanese cuisine all at once! not too bad, way overpriced though. Promptly seated with a gracious smile......but so far from the requested window:(

Portions are small, but the cuisine is bold and honest with a touch of intriguing "je ne sais quoi" Service is ok; it seems that they're always running from the guests over there, seriously!

The bar was by far the best place to be: great bartenders offering intense cocktails....Yummy! the crowd consisted mostly of older guys w/ wandering hands...beware!

lay down your stress and indulge!. They have some of the most amazing cocktails...and their wine list is to die for! The service is usually great, knowledge of the food serving is incredible. The host&hostess, bartenders, servers, etc, are always so welcoming and helpful.

I have not once had a dish there that I haven't enjoyed, as for the sushi: always fresh and delicious. Let me in! Let me in! love'em.
