Reading matter for the socially conscious, making this bookstore one of the smartest in town.. Since 1971, a collective has run Modern Times as a progressive neighborhood bookshop, though in recent years they have compromised this stance by taking on hourly employees to do the busy work. The roomy, bright shop features a spacious reading room, an often-blaring multicultural soundtrack and oversized thrift-shop armchairs. Perhaps a bit too funky for all but the most politically correct, though they get points as one of the few shops on Valencia with a public restroom. From disability literature to Native American history, environmental studies to transgender rights, if someone's been disenfranchised, Modern Times has a book or magazine to set the record straight. The holdings are strong in labor history, politics, anarchy studies and gay and lesbian non-fiction. There's a separate room for Spanish language literature, and a shelf devoted to La Raza and Chicano activism. In the back, you'll find course reading for many local colleges.

my favorite bookstore. If you love current political writing, you'll love this place. Everything from books on vegitarianism to Buddhism. Great selections and wonderful quirky books! They have a nice space set up in the back for book readings and a few chairs throughout the store (a must!). Stop in to pick up this week's Communist newsletter or just for a look.
