Editorial Review for Dog Eared Books – by Kim Cooper
The Scene
This popular Mission District shop--part of the local mini-chain that also includes Phoenix Books and Red Hill Books--is always hopping, with buys being made at the front counter and bookworms browsing the packed stacks for the latest additions. The clientele ranges widely in age, race and sexual orientation, as befits a shop that doesn't limit its holdings to satisfy any one demographic.
The Goods
The stock is mostly used, with a small selection of arty recent remainders on the front tables. There are strong selections in pop culture, music, film, queer studies, poetry, Eastern philosophy, travel literature and vintage children's books. You'll also find 'zines and small press chapbooks, an entire shelf dedicated to McSweeney's-related titles, and a smart mix of current and contemporary comics. Don't miss the small and very good new and used CD section in the back, featuring indie pop, punk rarities and offbeat '60s collectibles.

Dog Eared Books stays open until 10, has a knowledgeable and friendly staff, AND buys books for cash or trade. My only beef is that some very common paperbacks are priced unusually high, but maybe that's due to the ever-increasing trendiness of the Mission. Great selection of 'zines and comix, too.
